Summer Olympic Deaths/Dead Medallists

Recommended Posts

From the Hooroo Mate thread above, John Landy, Australian athlete, the second to run a sub-4 minute mile and ran The Miracle Mile against Bannister at the Empire Games, reportedly dead aged 91. Herald Sun is paywalled unfortunately. Olympian in 1952 and 1956, at the latter winning a bronze in the 1500m.

As an aside, many of the other names in the above Aussie list are dead, so who survives?

Already had a full Telegraph obit 30 mins ago... pre-prepped obviously. Whether it was purely age related or they knew he was ill, who knows. I imagine the latter though. I must make a mental note to make friends with someone in the Telegraph or Guardian obits department... that way I might actually score inside the top 5 on the DDP one year. :D

Robbie Brightwell MBE (wiki) not in such decent shape now as he's died aged 82.

Silver medalist sprinter for GB at Tokyo 1964. Also won two silver medals at the Commonwealth Games in Perth in '62.

Not picked in this year's DDP. Pity, because I'd be surprised if he didn't pull an obit.

I can see him getting the Times and also SPORTY round up as a minimum.

John Parlett (wiki), British Olympic and Empire Games runner, being reported dead at 96 on Twitter.

His wife, fellow Olympian Dorothy Manley, died last year aged 94. She was a DDP pick then (and a hit). He hasn't been picked this year.

Mark Conover, who stunned the American running world when he won the 1988 Olympic Marathon Trials in 1988, died on Wednesday, April 6, at age 61, of a recurrent cancer. A distinguished college coach, Conover also became an inspiring advocate of running as a positive force in times of ill health.

He was still at the peak of his running, having placed 10th at the 1992 Olympic Marathon Trials, when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 1993. He recovered, after extensive treatment, and qualified for and ran in the 1996 Olympic Marathon Trials.

Desai Williams achieved his highest accolade at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles when he was part of the bronze-medal winning 4 x 100m Canadian relay team. He then took a Commonwealth Gold Medal in 1986 in Edinburgh and a silver in Brisbane in 1982, again in the 4 x 100m relay.

However, two of his team-mates were Ben Johnson and Tony Sharpe, and all three of them were eventually proven guilty of doping.

He rehabilitated himself as a respected athletics sprint coach before being fired in 2015 for sexual harrassment. He was given a lifetime ban in 2018 by Athletics Canada.

That lifetime ban only lasted four years as Williams has died, aged 62. https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/summer/trackandfield/desai-williams-obit-1.6417244

The Norfolk-born former Olympian Mary Tagg has died at the age of 78.

The athlete, who competed at the 1968 summer Olympics in Mexico, remains one half of the only brother-and-sister duo to have represented Great Britain in athletics at the Games.

Born on November 10, 1943 in East Runton, near Cromer, Mary became a British sprinter and competed in the women’s 400 metres and relay. The sprinter was joined at her one and only Olympics by her younger brother, Mike Tagg – who was running the 10,000m.
