Not the cricketer Steve Smith:

Or the ALS-stricken football player I picked in Death By Numbers:

Not this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Smith_Sr. nor this one https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Smith_(wide_receiver,_born_1985) but this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Smith_(running_back)

Don't forget former NBA All Star Steve Smith,he spent 2 seasons as the Milquetoast out of place nice guy on the Jailblazer's Nba Team in the Early Aughts

Stricken Ajax midfielder Abdelhak Nouri, who suffered serious, lasting brain damage after collapsing during a friendly, has been transferred out of intensive care, and can breathe on his own, the club said Tuesday.  "He is no longer in an induced coma and has full respiratory functions," the club said, in a statement issued in the name of Nouri's family.

But it added soberly that "his condition further remains unchanged from previous updates and is stable, but with serious and permanent brain damage."

Well this is a serious blow to Cancel My Appointments DDP team, but frankly I don't root for death, it will come when it will come, and I'm happy to hear he has had limited progress.
That said, I think it's time for a joke: What is an Ajax fan's favourite vegetable?

Bit of a live update from the commentary on Bayern v Ajax in the Champions League, as one of his friends did a celebration for him. Nouri is apparently "getting better, thankfully" despite having "recently been in a coma".

Needless to say I've watched him like a hawk (meaning once a month I check in lol).
He is forever brain damaged and probably the mind of a 2 year old.  So 'getting better' a relative term I suppose.  One of those 'may be best had he departed' kinda deals.  But who am I to judge?

Debated over posting this. Tony Hopper - Carlisle player of fairly recent vintage - has life limiting illness; http://www.carlisleunited.co.uk/news/article/2016-17/tony-hopper-to-say-thank-you-to-the-fans-at-the-portsmouth-game-3574726.aspx

Limited to 20 months, as he's now dead. See he also played for one of my favourite examples of non-league overspending, Celtic Nation.

RIP As per the link played in the Great Escape game where Jimmy Glass (the goalie) scored in 94th minute to keep Carlisle in the Football League.

Mary and me might have been planning to ruin each others Unique for 2019 - no matter now.

You just beat me to it - really sad. Saw him play often enough and he was central to one of the best Carlisle squads in recent memory.

TBH I wasn't planning to pick him and partly from pure sentiment. Leaving him out was less for the Jimmy Glass game because those of us who really cared saw that season as the nail-biting nightmare result of the brainstorms of an idiot chairman. St Jimmy's Day was a let-off we barely deserved and - in any case - little more than a minor reprieve ahead of us falling into non-league in 2004, and more for his part in the better sides of the mid-90's including a championship, another promotion and two runs to Wembley - including our first win there.

Big Ron Atkinson in Hospital abroad after "a dizzy spell", doesn't sound too serious to be fair but he is 80 next year so one to keep an eye on as i doubt he will live into his 90's.

Singapore football icon Arshad Khamis, who played for the Lions in the 1970s, died in Chilliwack, Canada, from a suspected heart attack on Friday morning (Oct 12). He was 68.  Known for his powerful, long-range shots, the prolific striker played alongside national heroes such as Fandi Ahmad, Quah Kim Song, Samad Allapitchay and the late Dollah Kassim.

Jamaican footballer Luton Shelton (Nov 1985) has ALS. I remember him playing alongside Henrik Larsson at Helsingborg many years ago. He's Jamaica's all-time top scorer, so definitely obitable.

Help for that obit - he played 4 English Premier League matches for Sheffield United in 2007 and about a dozen more in the Championship.

Former Real Mardid player Fernando Serena has died aged 77.

Spanish obit: https://www.realmadrid.com/noticias/2018/10/fallece-serena

Should've had more international caps.

Madrid came from behind v Partizan in the 66 European Cup Final to win 2-1, with Serena scoring a peach to win the Cup, through ball on the break, heads it up, chests it down and rams it in from outside the box.

Oleg Bazylevych at 80. No English obits, so here's Shakhtar Donetsk's English twitter feed:

Managed many Russian and Ukrainian sides, and was Assistant to Lobanovsky when Kiev won the Cup Winners Cup.

As USSR co-manager, he failed to qualify for Euro 76.

He was manager of Shakhtar Donetsk, CSKA Moscow, and Zorya, all of whom became far more renowned and successful clubs years after he left.

He was the 2nd full time manager of the Ukrainian national team, but in his first competitive match, they lost 2-0 at home to Lithuania and he got sacked.

Really, Scotland should have signed him in the late 90s, we'd have qualified for something by now with that level of personal bad luck!

Doesn't look like the kind of crash people are exiting alive. BT Sport has had something of a cursed day.
