39 years???!! And due to an operation that went wrong...horrible way to die.

And not even a serious operation. He'd retired from football the previous year and went in to have some work done on a knee ligament that was giving him grief.

Gunther Wienhold, the goalkeeper in the West German Olympic side at the Munich games, has died aged 72.

He was a teammate of Uli Hoeness and Ottmar Hitzfeld in this particular squad.

Not exactly in the Spirit of the Thread, but might lead to a thread of its own after tomorrow.

The All Ireland fitba final is then, and it might bust the Curse of Mayo.

66 years of failure down to allegedly pissing off a priest on the way home after last winning it in 1951.

Interestingly from 'our' point of view, there are two elderly survivors from that team, and as long as The Curse lives, they would be highly obitable.

Padraig Carney and Paddy Prendergast.

Dubs win tomorrow and I might do one for them.

Yes, I'm shoehorning in here, sorry.

Of interest probably only to charon, ha, but Paddy Prendergast has died: https://westernpeople.ie/2021/09/26/death-announced-of-mayos-1951-all-ireland-hero/

Padraig Carney died in 2019.

Sub Mick Loftus is still alive according to the article.

I can only think it’s because of the curse as Irish Sport news ( with no link to Northern Ireland ) is pretty rare on there

His son is the actor Derek Riddell (b. 1967, wiki) of No Angels, Doctor Who, Ugly Betty, Silent Witness etc.

His wife was Scottish stage actress Hope Ross (IMDb), who also had recurring roles in Taggart. She died on 24 October 2018, as per this tweet from her son:

That's Alan Birchenall, rather than anyone else. The good news is (or not, depending...) that he's home (also according to Twitter sources) and was taken to hospital as a precaution. He was a big campaigner for defibrillators in public places following a cardiac arrest almost 5 years ago.

George Kinnell, who played 130 games for Aberdeen between 1959 and 1963 has died aged 83.

After leaving Aberdeen for Stoke City, he played 91 times for The Potters in three years before moving to Oldham, Sunderland and then Middlesbrough, retiring after a spell in Australia with Juventus Melbourne.

He was also a cousin of the legendary Jim Baxter (1939-2001)

David Brooks has been diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin Lymphoma. Survival rate is about 90% for that stage so hopefully he won’t be a DDP hit in the coming years.

Fellow Welshman Dan Barden diagnosed with Testicle Cancer aged 20. https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12437322/norwich-goalkeeper-dan-barden-diagnosed-with-testicular-cancer
