Gordon Lee, a former fullback with Aston Villa from 1955 to 1966 who would go on to manage Everton and Newcastle, leading the former to much success between 1977 and 1981, has died. He was 87.

Managed Blackburn to promotion as Third Division champions in 1974-75 too.

Gordon Lee laid the foundations for Everton's success in the 1980's for it was he who bought or debuted Ratcliffe, Sharp and Kevin Richardson. Howard Kendall turned them into champions, but at least he had the framework in place to work from.

Not like last night's mess

Checked to see if he made the Euro 92 squad based on his four CIS caps but alas, he did not.

Aleksei Bakharev, a midfielder who won one cap for both Russia and Ukraine in his career, has died aged 45.

His sole cap for Russia came in a friendly with Brazil on November 18th 1998.

And his sole cap for Ukraine came on August 21st 2002 against Iran.

His playing career took him to several clubs in Russia, with two spells at Lada Togliatti between 1994 and 1997, returning there for a year in 2006.

The club he made the most appearances for, however, was Shakhtar Donetsk, where he made 124 appearances and scoring 10 goals between 1999 and 2006 - including one at Highbury against Arsenal in the Champions League in 2000.

Spartak Moscow, Rotor Volgograd, Rubin Kazan, Nosta Novotroitsk, Mashuk-KMV Pyatigorsk and FSA Voronezh were the other clubs he plied his trade.

Louis van Gaal just announced he has an 'aggressive form' of prostate cancer. Has been treated 25 times for it already.

Turns 71 in August and has no other known health issues.

Edit: He got diagnosed with it late 2020.

David Keyte, former Hereford United chairman, has died - https://yourherefordshire.co.uk/all/sports-news/news-former-hereford-united-chairman-david-keyte-has-died-after-a-battle-with-cancer/

His reign not only saw Hereford's relegation from the Football league but their eventual liquidation. Safe to say he won't be much missed by HUFC fans.

Finally got round to watching some of that BBC doc about the Premier League from late last year. Everyone interviewed (from Kenny Dalglish to Les Ferdinand) look good for their age, but Colin Hendry's seen better days, and surprisingly only just turned 56.

He's had it tough since he retired. His wife died from some botched cosmetic surgery and it hit him hard. He was declared bankrupt about a decade ago too IIRC. Appeared a few times for a Blackburn Sunday League outfit a few years ago, though, after he'd turned 50, so still in OK shape but miss his mane of blonde hair. Beloved at Rovers, but it was still beautiful watching Gazza put him on his arse in Euro 96.

Facially he's always looked older than his years (probably Scottish genes) and now he's going bald. I don't think he looks especially unwell though.
