Twitter reporting the death of former League of Ireland player Ricky McEvoy at age 55. He played with the Shamrock Rovers in the 1980s and 90s.

Edit: Tweet that went with this item deleted after the death proved to be a hoax. Thank you to @Ulitzer95 for the info.

Lincoln City / Rotherham Utd. player Dave Smith (wikidied in late September, aged 74.

Death seems to have gone unnoticed until now (his Wiki page was only updated today), probably over the confusion with Dave Smith (b. 1933, wiki) who also died in September.

If your surname was Smith, god knows why you'd call your child "David", "John", "James" etc...

St Mirren, Celtic and Scotland striker Frank McGarvey has been diagnosed with cancer

Frank McGarvey's diagnosis doesn't sound too promising.

"I've been to the hospital and they've told me what's probably going to happen to me.

"This might be my last time to see them [Celtic], so if I can just thank them very much for everything.

"When you come to see your family for the last time maybe, it's sad."

In my lifetime, there have been nearly 1000 David Smith's, 1200 John Smith's and 2000 James Smith's born in Scotland alone!

Inane stat for you.

Hoax. Belfast Telegraph confirm Ricky McEvoy is alive and well, and that news of his death was a "sick joke".

The goal (about halfway through this clip), for those not familiar. Newcastle (of the top division) lead 1-0 courtesy of Malcolm MacDonald, with five minutes left when Radford of 5th tier Hereford scored an equaliser, taking the game to extra time, during which Ricky George would score a shock winner for Hereford.
