Art For Death's Sake

Recommended Posts

FB post reporting the death of British-born Aussie sculptor Marc Clark (wiki), just short of his 98th.

FB post reporting the death of American graphic artist Janet Doub Erickson (wiki), aged 97.

Will either receive Wiki standard obits? Hmmm…

EDIT: Obit for Erickson.

Mel Gooding, art historian, author and critic but probably more significantly (if you wanted a QO) occasional obituary writer for The Guardian, reportedly died on Monday:

Juhani Palmu update:

Back from hospital. Can now be interviewed and signs paintings. There's also one picture of him smoking a cigar in bed, I don't think he'd survive a third fire.

Juhani Palmu, 77, wants to keep painting as he has commissions that he "has" to do. Wants a prosthesis for this purpose.

This guy is already quite a miracle. He has been in a wheelchair for over ten years due to a ministroke, heart problems, diabetes and on top of all this he has battled urethral cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer and survived two house fires. And still keeps smoking in bed.

French performance artist Pierre Pinoncelli (wikidead at 92.

His "art" included:

*damaging 2 of the 8 copies of "Fountain" (1917) by Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968) with a hammer as a statement that the work had lost its provocative value.
*throwing a bucket of red paint over French culture minister André Malraux (1901–1976).
*using a sawn-off shotgun to rob a bank in Nice of 10 francs.
*cutting off the tip of one of his own fingers at an art exhibition in Colombia in protest of the FARC guerrillas holding French-Colombian politician Íngrid Betancourt (b. 1961) hostage.

Facebook post reporting the death of stained glass window artist Patrick Reyntiens OBE (wiki) on 25 October, aged 95.

Quite a renowned establishment figure who has received loads of coverage from the British press in the past. Should get a QO.

Did Marc Clark actually die? The death mention was removed from wikipedia as "unsourced" and one month one week later he still seems to be marked alive everywhere.

Several art pages on Facebook say so. Pretty sure he's died and it's just not been picked up. This happens a lot with artists – Vladas Meskenas and Wook Kundor spring to mind.

BTW, My list of Wiki bios with subjects who are dead, but for which no reliable source exists to mark them as dead, is now in excess of 300 names. Some will get sorted in time, others possibly never.

Dan Lacey, the pancake painter, is in hospital and in the very end stages of brain cancer:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Lacey

Notable for his meme-y political pictures that inexplicable feature pancakes:

Paintings, Celebrities, And Pancakes, Pancakes, Pancakes - DailyArt Magazine

Dan Lacey: posav — LiveJournal

But it's not just political paintings, but also, for example, a picture of a naked Justin Bieber with a pancake penis, currently owned by rapper Macklemore:

News is that his heart stopped beating twice while being treated at a hospital this year after that second fire. Can now move around in a wheelchair again.

Rumours that Wayne Thiebaud, US artist famed for his depiction of everyday objects in the pop art era, has died.

Anything on FB or other platforms? Couple of mentions on Twitter.

Rather important - he's picked for the DDP. Would he obit? That's another matter.

Absolutely. I'm not much of an art wonk. What I know I learnt from my dad, but Thiebaud is massive in the art world.
