Each Year's Most Significant Death.

Recommended Posts

A one year anniversary of my original thread (most significant death for every year from 1963 onwards), except this time I am working backwards from 2008 to as far back as we can go, this list goes back to 1961 since I haven't had time yet to research that far back and I want to go in order (meaning I am drawing a blank with 1960). My only rule is that it must be one person (not like Time's person of the year where it can be multiple people), thus Muhammed Atta for 2001 instead of all 9/11 deaths; Spencer Tracy for 1967 instead of Apollo 1 astronauts; Cary Grant for 1986 instead of Challenger Astronauts, Bob Hope for 2003 instead of Columbia Astronauts.

2008: Tim Russert (thus far of course)
2007: Bezanir Bhutto
2006: Gerald Ford
2005: Pope John Paul II
2004: Ronald Reagan
2003: Bob Hope
2002: Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother
2001: Muhhamed Atta
2000: Sir Alec Guinness
1999: King Hussein
1998: Frank Sinatra
1997: Princess Diana
1996: Carl Sagan
1995: Yitzhak Rabin
1994: Richard M. Nixon
1993: Audrey Hepburn
1992: Sam Walton
1991: Dr. Suess
1990: Sammy Davis Jr.
1989: Lucille Ball
1988: Roy Orbison
1987: Jackie Gleason
1986: Cary Grant
1985: Orson Wells
1984: Richard Burton
1983: Muddy Waters
1982: Princess Grace Kelly
1981: Anwar Sedat
1980: John Lennon
1979: John Wayne
1978: Pope John Paul I
1977: Elvis Presley
1976: Mao Zedong
1975: Moe Howard
1974: Georges Pompidou
1973: Lyndon Baines Johnson
1972: Harry S. Truman
1971: Nikita Khrushchev
1970: Charles de Gaulle
1969: Dwight D. Eisenhower
1968: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
1967: Spencer Tracy
1966: Walt Disney
1965: Winston Churchill
1964: Herbert Hoover
1963: John F. Kennedy
1962: Marilyn Monroe
1961: Ernest Hemingway

Most significant by decade

2000's: Pope John Paul II (thus far but nearly impossible to beat IMO)
1990's: Princess Diana
1980's: John Lennon
1970's: Elvis
1960's: John F. Kennedy

Notice that four died tragically and/or unexpectedly and only one (JPII) died expectedly and in old age.

Also I know my choice of Tim Russert for 2008 will likely be attacked for being american-centric but that is preliminary since that is just thus far for the year and the fact that his death was a media circus that put all others to shame thus far this year (Heath Ledger, Charlton Heston), his political ties as a prominent member of the media, particular in regards to presidential politics, his funeral was attended by president Bush and former presidents and presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama. If he remains at the top at the end of this year it would mean that it was a slow year in terms of super significant deaths at least compared to 2004-2007.

Great list. I pretty much agree with you.

However, i would say that Charlton Heston was a lot more well known internationally than Tim Russert (and even Heath Ledger for that matter). Tim Russert's death was huge in America; his death received much more media coverage in the US than even Heath Ledger! I think the major reason why Tim Russert's death was significant was that in addition to him being fairly young and dying suddenly, Russert was a very prominent news figure this year. His face was ubiquitous when it came to media coverage of the primary elections. Every time you watched media coverage of the primary elections in the US, Tim Russert was always at the forefront of the reportings. If Tim Russert died last year or 2006, I don't think his death would receive as much media coverage.

I also think that you can make the argument that George Carlin is so far the most signifcant death for 2008. He's probably the king of modern stand up comedy. He's been a profound influence on generations of stand up comedians and entertainers in general. He was immensely popular across all age groups (many people in their teens right now are big George Carlin fans).

In terms of celebrity deaths, 2008 has been wildly inconsistent. July 2008 has been rather slim in terms of celebrity deaths (the only celebrities that I have heard of who died were Jesse Helms, Tony Snow, Estelle Getty, and Randy Pausch. And Pausch arguably became a celebrity only because of his illness, sadly. If Pausch never had pancreatic cancer, he would've been just another anonymous college professor. So really, only three major celebrities died in the past month. Yet in June this year, we lost a ton of celebrities (Yves Saint Laurent, Bo Diddley, Mel Ferrer, Jim McKay, Tim Russert, Stan Winston, Cyd Charrisse, George Carlin, and Don S. Davis).

Major celebrity deaths (2008)

January: Maila Nurmi (Vampira), Edmund Hillary, Brad Renfro, Heath Ledger, Bobby Fischer, Suzanne Pleshette, Suharto

February: Roy Scheider, Tom Landos

March: Jeff Healey, Gary Gygax, Anthony Minghella, Arthur C. Clarke, Paul Scofield, Richard Widmark

April: Charlton Heston

May: John Phillip Law, Sydney Pollack, Dick Martin, Harvey Korman

June: Yves Saint Laurent, Bo Diddley, Mel Ferrer, Jim McKay, Tim Russert, Stan Winston, Cyd Charrisse, George Carlin, Don S. Davis

July: Jesse Helms, Tony Snow, Estelle Getty, Randy Pausch

As you can see, it's been wildly inconsistent with some really slow months (February and April) and some months where 2 major celebrities died almost a week.

However, i expect either August or September to be big in terms of celebrity deaths. Right now, Elizabeth Taylor is hospitalized and reportedly in bad shape (although her publicist claims otherwise) and Paul Newman was spotted in a wheelchair (I saw the photo of him and it doesn't look good). i dunno why, but I have a hunch that we will have quite a few major celebrity deaths in the upcoming months.

I still think Karen Carpenter for 1983, but you know that already so I won't go on, For 1960 I'd probably say Clark Gable.

For comparisons sake (I have the day off today and am really bored):

Major celebrity deaths (2007)

January: Darrent Williams, Yvonne de Carlo, Carlo Ponti, Darlene Conley, Art Buchwald, Sidney Shelton, and Molly Ivins

February: Barbara McNair, Frankie Laine, Anna Nicole Smith, Ian Richardson, Billy Thorpe

March: Thomas Eagleton, John Inman, Bradley Delp, Richard Jeni, Betty Hutton, Gareth Hunt

April: Eddie Robinson, Bob Clark, Barry Nelson, Roscoe Lee Browne, Kurt Vonnegut, Don Ho, Boris Yeltsin, Jack Valenti, Tom Poston, Gordon Scott

May: Wally Schirra, Jerry Falwell, Yolanda King, Charles Nelson Reilly

June: Craig L. Thomas, Kurt Waldheim, Chris Benoit, Liz Claiborne, Joel Siegel

July: Beverly Sills, Lady Bird Johnson, Richard Franklin, Tammi Faye Messner, László Kovács, Ulrich Mühe, Mike Reid, Tom Snyder, Michelangelo Antonioni, Ingmar Bergman, Bill Walsh

It does seem like celebrities were dying at a much faster rate in 2007 so we shall see.

I would have thought that Nelson Mandela would shove aside the Pope for the 2000s if he died in the next two years, Possibly the same for Muhammad Ali, Neil Armstrong or The Queen.

Two 1950s years: 1955 would be Albert Einstein, 1953 would be Josef Stalin.

There's a few gaps to fill in, I'm sure you'll knock yourself out trying.

1959

1958

1957

1956

1955 Albert Einstein

1954

1953 Josef Stalin

1952 King George VI

1951

1950

1949

1948

1947

1946

1945 Adolf Hitler

... No one died - there was a war on.

1934 Marie Curie

...yawn

1791 Wolfgang Amedeus Mozart

...Are we there yet?

68 Nero Claudius etc. (significant for me owing to some dull Nero related translations in Latin, I forget now who or what but I think it involved his mother. Why do we persist on teaching Latin? I think I'm going to get it in the head here as there are a lot of creative artistic types around the DL)

...

33 Jesus

...

44 BC Julius Caesar (purely for having to read Shakespeare's remake of events in English that his death was oh so bloody relevant)

3427 BC Fred Flinstone, I met him once, he was a lovely man.

So what's your party trick going to be this time next year? Most significant death in reverse alphabetical order for every year, in chronological order, ever since Homo erectus?

1300 - Jofre de Foixa, had to include him as he seems to have been a Benedictine monk, my surname is supposed to have been derived from them, obviously the vows of chastity didn't apply to them or perhaps we are just a long line of bastards.

Also notable happenings in 1300(circa) was the formation of the Worshipful Company of Tallow Chandlers (that's a tenner you owe me Mono, only took me a week :rip: ).

I would say Solzhenytsin for 2008

Maybe, not sure if he's really a household name though. Charlton Heston was much more of a household name.

But I do acknowledge that Solzhenytsin appears to be a big name in Europe. But I'm not sure if he's really a big name in America (most people in my generation, the 35-and-under crowd, probably do not know who he is, or they may only know the name in passing).

Then again, I never heard of Edmund Hillary or Marcel Marceau so I'm probably not very credible (I'm too young!!!)

I'll help you out Chic.

In light of a recent poll I think your entry for 1983 needs serious revision, in both the chronological and reverse chronological order lists you have so graciously compiled.

In fact, seeing as popular opinion seems to disagree with you for one year which, in view of the benefit of the doubt paradox, could be an anomalous result I think perhaps you need to put democracy to the test to see whether your judgement is indeed of the same ilk as the majority.

On second thoughts, please don't. I wish to retain my will to live.

From what I've just been reading, it could be a photo finish between Heston and Paul Newman... :birthday:

If Paul Newman dies this year (as is expected by many people), then he will definitely be the most significant person to die in 2008. In terms of popularity and legacy, Newman trumps Heston by a long shot.

While Heston was great playing larger-than-life personalities, Newman was revered as an actor's actor. He was the personification of the perfect actor. He had talent, looks, intelligence, grace, and a sense of humor. He played deep layered, multi-faceted characters. Not only was he a fantastic actor, he was also very well educated (went to Yale University) and was a successful businessman with a strong business acumen (he ran a successful company called Newman's Own which donated all its profits to charities and also owned a race car franchise).

if you had to poll between Heston and Newman, nine out of ten people will say Newman is the better actor. Newman will also leave behind a much more powerful legacy that reaches way beyond Hollywood. Paul Newman is one actor that I can honestly call a true role model.
