Vera Lynn

2005 will be the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, if that is not an omen for Dame Vera, I don't know what is.

Only in her 20s... 87 now. She'll be here for years to come.

Hope so...

When she dies, the air will be filled with: " we'll meet again"

Not a pretty perspective now, is it?

when she does pop her clogs it would be nice for waters and gilmore et al to gather together in bands to sing

"Does anybody here remember Vera Lynn

Remember how she said,

That we would meet again,

Some sunny day.

Vera!

Vera!

What has become of you

Does anybody else in here feel the way I do"

Just heard a medley of Dame Vera's on Oceanside, California's KKSM radio, ("Doug Best Swings") Disc Jockey Doug is a former Canadian who was Lancaster crewmember during WWII. He plays Vera frequently.

I've never had the privilege of seeing her in person, but from her many recordings, especially those done during and after WWII, to my mind, she has one of the most perfect voices ever possessed by a singer.

How 'bout a 60th anniversary tour of America, Vera? All you have to do is go to the many southern and western retirement communities...you'd sell out and "knock 'em dead!"

She's retired from singing now, sadly.

Just "discovered" Vera's music after watching a documentary on her called "Songbirds." Didn't realize what a terrific singer she is...Too bad I've missed her concerts...

As for the "We'll Meet Again" stuff...she was 22 years old in 1939 and most of her career was in the post-WW2 era -- with many of her hits coming in the 1950s...For example, she was the first UK singer to have a number 1 hit in the USA -- for over nine weeks in the early 1950s...She had a hit TV series for 7 years was during the 1970s...etc...In other words, to solely identify Vera with WW2 songs is wrong...(I've done my research :pop:

Moreover (from another posted email), "Wish Me Luck as You Wave me Goodbye" is Gracie Fields' hit song -- from 1939...If you watch Monty Python you'd know?...:)

How to you get to be a former Canadian? Is that like Greg Rusedski or something?

Is that old trout still alive? If so, shame.

Nowadays, bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover would be the title of a porno movie being made in a balloon.

Thats what I thought it was when I started to write it out, then I thought " Nah" But I'll try to find out. I've got the German version, but my German is not too good.

I found a translation back into english of the German version of the lumberjack song.

Really rather senseless if you ask me.

I'm a lumberjack and I feel strong.

I sleep all night and chop all day

I fell trees, I skip and jump

I go the the WC

On Wednesdays I go shopping

And have cookies and coffee

I'm a lumberjack and I feel strong

I sleep all night and chop all day

I fell trees, I eat my bread

Put flowers in a vase

I slip into women's clothing

And lounge around in bars

I'm a lumberjack and I feel strong

I sleep all night and chop all day

I fell trees, wear high heeled shoes

Stockings and a bra

I'd like to be a little girl

Just like my uncle Walter

and here's Google's automatic translation which has a better entertainment value by far:

The Lumberjack song

How are the surviving Pythons keeping? Any of them likely to kick it?

Greetings from Germany,

Reminds me of that great part of the Woody Allen film - Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask - the bit with the cross-dressing husband.
