This is doing the rounds on Twitter atm, the original We'll Meet Again recording. Just Vera accompanied by Arthur Young on the Novachord. This is the version familoar to wartime listeners. (Recorded 1939 according the blurb). It's not quite the jingoistic version we've been subjected to ever since.

No ... it's a bit boring really.

The last great singer from the 40s I think, and certainly the last person to have a hit song in the thirties. Very sad RIP

Tribute show was a re-run of 100th birthday show. I suppose it's best they could do under the circumstances.

I wouldn't call her a GREAT singer but more of a good singer.

She was in the right place at the right time and that propelled her to national icon status.

If she had not been in said place at said time her career may have stalled or limped on.

Bit like Alma Cogans but without the dead part.

Well, that porn film I envisaged her making with old Tom certainly is not going to happen now.

 She hasn't been buried yet.

It's alright they can make it in heaven with Jimmy Savile as producer in a few months.....

Hits like this make it possible for us mere mortals to get closer to the leaders on DDP

Exactly, her greatest talent was timing. The war came at exactly the right time for her. If she had been born 25 years later she wouldn't have become that famous, but I like to think she would have collaborated with Chas n Dave.

There was the time Vera complained about the catering onboard a Japanese cruise ship. On receiving her meal on the fourth day she was heard loudly to exclaim "Whale meat again"

I remember during the mad cow disease crisis when people stopped buying beef  people used to do a variation on that joke' We'll eat meat again !'

Its the end of a Vera

Actually I glanced at the tv listings for tonight and was impressed to see that ITV seemed to be doing a 2 hour tribute to her, only to realise it was just the latest episode of the detective series Vera. Very dissappointed :(

Daily Mail managed to limit their tribute to six pages on Wednesday.

MoS might be more - whole supplement perhaps....

I’m the one who tweeted this! Quite pleasantly surprised how many people found it interesting.
