Sir Creep 7,070 Posted June 10, 2016 Antoni Gaudi, architect; his surname the genesis of the word 'gaudy' to describe his over-the-top kitschy designs - 90 years That is not true. The word 'gaudy' is much older than that, it's in Shakespeare. Comes from the Latin gaudere, meaning rejoice/celebrate, I think. Those A levels not completely forgotten According to the NGRAM viewer https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=gaudy&year_start=1300&year_end=2000&corpus=15&smoothing=3&share=&direct_url=t1%3B%2Cgaudy%3B%2Cc0#t1%3B%2Cgaudy%3B%2Cc1gaudy first appeared in written form in 1578 which is around Shakespeare's time but before his plays were first published. I'll buy that, I was parroting what was said a few times on our American networks during the Olympic telecasts from Barcelona wher his work was prevalent. So looks like they were wrong unless it meant something different in Shakespeare's time/usage. SC
