Stephen Hillenburg died on this day 4 years ago, aged 57.

image.jpeg.bad2171446d61a45a78862d6d00c4459.jpeg

Hillenburg was a marine biologist who used a comic he created, called The Intertidal Zone, to educate his students. Among its characters was "Bob the Sponge":

image.jpeg.2a83f4083e2a4940cf5243a51e695645.jpeg

In 1987, Hillenburg left his job to pursue a career in animation- Hillenburg would direct many episodes of Rocko's Modern Life during its run from 1993 to 1996.

After production on the show ended, Hillenburg pitched his own show to Nickelodeon- originally under the working title of Spongeboy Ahoy!, it got greenlit, and in 1999, premiered on the network as SpongeBob SquarePants. Hillenburg would occasionally provide voices, most notably as Potty, the puppet parrot of Patchy the Pirate, the president of the SpongeBob Fan Club (below).

image.jpeg.d79b740871029727b6bdf74b36f8558c.jpeg

Hillenburg served as the showrunner from SpongeBob's inception until 2004, following the release of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (that was intended to be the series finale). Hillenburg would eventually return to the show in 2014, and worked on the story to The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, released in 2015.

In March of 2017, Hillenburg announced that he was diagnosed with ALS, and he died after a 20-month battle. SpongeBob's 20th anniversary special ("SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout") and the third SpongeBob movie (The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run) were dedicated in his memory.

Clovis I of the Franks died on this day 1511 years ago, aged 45.

image.jpeg.a8eae7896727c2bde3cecb8f6e985cfd.jpeg

Clovis was the son of Childeric I, the king of the Salian Franks- at the time, the Franks were divided into separate kingdoms. After Childeric's death in 481, Clovis became king, and the 15-year old was set on uniting all of the Franks. In 486, he conquered Soissons, followed by Thuringia in 491, Alemannia in 496, Burgundy in 507, and Cambrai in 509. Clovis' territory had expanded from what is now Belgium, to parts of Germany and a large portion of France.

Clovis is perhaps more known for his conversion to Christianity. His wife, Clotilde, was Catholic, which may have been a reason- although he believed in Arianism (in which Jesus is a separate being from God), rather than Nicene Christianity (God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are the same being). On Christmas in 508, Clovis was baptized. This may have been an attempt to form an alliance with the papacy, which was rising from the Western Roman Empire's ashes. The dynasty that Clovis started, the Merovingians, would also claim direct descent from Jesus and Mary Magdalene.

Clovis is traditionally stated to have died in 511, although one account claims he was alive in 513. Regardless of his death year, his kingdom was partitioned between his four sons, and each realm would drift apart from each other until the reign of Charlemagne (768-814).

Chespirito died on this day 8 years ago, aged 85.

image.jpeg.7998cdb2b55b8954b7fba49f28b333ac.jpeg

Born as Roberto Gomez, Chespirito first wrote plays and television scripts using his pseudonym- meaning "Little Shakespeare" in Spanish. In 1968, he moved on to acting on the children's sketch comedy show Los Supergenios de la Mesa Cuadrada ("The Super Geniuses of the Square Table"), which he also created. The show was immensely popular, and would later be renamed after Chespirito himself. The show had two runs- 1968 to 1973, and 1980 to 1995.

In 1973, two characters on the show got their own spinoffs- El Chapulín Colorado ("The Red Grasshopper"), a parody of superhero shows, and El Chavo de Ocho ("The Kid From Number Eight"), in which Chesperito portrayed an eight-year old orphan.

La obra de Chespirito criticada y amada por muchosimage.jpeg.2af380d7780614072d3247689a745bc0.jpeg

These characters remain hugely popular in Mexico- In 2012, El Chavo received on average 90 million daily views in all of its markets, having earned a total of $1.7 billion in syndication fees 20 years after it ended. El Chapulin Colorado was also the inspiration for the recurring character of Bumblebee Man on The Simpsons, when Matt Groening saw the show while at a hotel near the Mexican-American border.

Chespirito died from complications of Parkinson's disease (that led to heart failure). 40,000 fans attended his public funeral on November 30th (after a private one was held the day before).

On this day in 2010  Canadian American actor Leslie Nielsen died aged 84.

Best known for his comedic parts in the Naked Gun film franchise  and the disaster drama  movie Airplane- although he was also very much present in what is referred to as the golden age of american television in the 1950s  in the early days of the medium.

Anecdotally, when I hear his name I always remember him appearing on The Terry Wogan show making crude farting jokes with his costar  Priscilla Presley.

On this day in 2003 former Southampton FC  football player and subsequently their manager , Ted  Bates, died aged 85.

He played for Southampton from 1937-1953 and successfully  managed them between 1955-1973, steering them to progress to  promotion through the various football leagues. So much so that his eventual nickname was Mr Southampton.

Ted was from a strong sporting family  being the son of  cricketer  Eddie Bates who played for Yorkshire and also for Glamorgan,  as well as playing football for Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United.

He was also the grandson  of cricketer Billy Bates  , who is regarded as one of England crickets best all rounders in the early days of international cricket.

Cary Grant died on this day 36 years ago, aged 82.

Cary Grant - Wikipedia

Grant was born with the name Archibald Leach, and he performed in vaudeville shows during the 1920s after moving to the US. In 1931, after starring in the play Nikki (opposite Fay Wray), Leach was signed to Paramount Pictures and changed his name to sound "all-American". His movies in the '30s and '40s included Blond VenusThe Awful TruthBringing Up BabyOnly Angels Have WingsPenny Serenade, and None But the Lonely Heart, with the latter two earning him Oscar nominations.

During the 1940s and 1950s, Grant worked closely with Alfred Hitchcock, starring in films of his such as SuspicionNotoriousTo Catch A Thief, and (most notably) North by Northwest.

Grant was considered for the role of James Bond in Dr. No, but was turned down as he was only committed to one film as the character (and thus the role went to Sean Connery). Grant retired from acting in 1966 when his daughter Jennifer was born.

While at an Iowa theatre in 1986, Grant began to stumble in front of his photographer, and was taken back to the hotel he was staying at. Grant was suffering from a stroke, and he refused to be taken to the hospital- he slipped into a coma, was taken to said hospital, and died close to midnight.

Following this, at the Mandela Bar at the University of Warwick, the idea of a certain list first formed when the news reached a "large team of novices"...

George H. W. Bush died on this day 4 years ago, aged 94.

George H.W. Bush: Former president visited York County several times

Virtually everyone knows why he's famous (41st US president), so here's an interesting bit of trivia: in 1944, Bush was shot down near Chichijima, one of the Bonin Islands of Japan. Eight of his colleagues were also shot down, and Bush was the only one to evade capture. The others were then tortured, killed, and then cannibalized by the Japanese officers (four of them were later executed for this).

In a cosmic sort of revenge, Bush infamously vomited on the lap of prime minister Kiichi Miyazawa during a visit in 1992 (due to gastroenteritis), creating a new word in the Japanese vernacular- "Bushu-suru", or "to bush (vomit)".

The final years of Bush's life were well-documented. He was diagnosed with vascular Parkinsonism in 2012, leading to his first of six appearances on the DeathList in 2013. In January 2017, Bush was hospitalized and therefore could not attend the inauguration of Donald Trump. He was out by February, and he and his wife Barbara did the coin toss for Super Bowl LI.

image.jpeg.e48a24a284d0b20e9e279b1942cd61b3.jpeg

Barbara died in April of 2018, and a day after her funeral, Bush was in critical condition due to sepsis. He would soon receive a service dog named Sully via a veteran's service program. His last public appearance would be to vote in the 2018 midterm election (in which Sully can be seen).

image.jpeg.4996e57cb87cdc50ab2420a16274c377.jpeg

Three days before his death, former president Barack Obama made a final visit to him. The next day, he refused to eat and refused to be taken back to the hospital. By the next day, his Secretary of State and lifelong friend James Baker came to stay with him, and gave a detailed description of his final day- Bush's conditioned improved, and his last meal was three eggs, a cup of yogurt, and some fruit drinks. Bush's health soon worsened, and noted singer Ronan Tynan came to perform two songs for him. Bush died at 10:10 PM CST, shortly after telling his son George that he loved him over the phone.

Bush's state funeral notably made fellow DeathList alumnus and future hit Bob Dole rise from his wheelchair to salute him.

Its 28 years since the death of US actor Lionel Stander. It was moider lung cancer.

See the source image

Born in The Bronx, his acting career began on the stage in Greenwich Village, before making his film debut a few years later, appearing generally uncredited in shorts featuring the likes of Fatty Arbuckle, with the last (credited) alongside Bob Hope in 1935 before appearing in his first major picture, The Scoundrel, with Noel Coward. This lead to him signing a contract with Columbia Pictures, and work was then steady for the next few years., with appearances in notable films like Mr. Deeds Goes to Town. He was also in demand for radio work, and voicing cartoon characters for Walter Lantz productions.

A noted activist, he was one of the founder members of the Screen Actors Guild, and supported a strike by technicians in 1937. Columbia pictures head allegedly called him a "red son of a bithch" and threatened to sue anyone who gave him a contract. He was one of the first to be called in by the House Unamerican Activities Committee, but despite being cleared of being a Communist Party member his workload continued to drop.

His film work during the first half of the forties was mainly confined to smaller studios. In the late 40s Stander was blacklisted by Hollywood, working only in theatre radio and TV. He was again accused of being a communist, and sued his accuser Marc Lawrence, following which the blacklist also encompassed TV and radio, leaving him working just in theatre. He requested an early HUAC hearing, which finally took place 2 years later. He was blacklisted for over 25 years, his career all but disappearing.

Things improved when he moved to Europe in 1964, first to London and then Rome. He moved back to the US at the end of the 70s, and took his most famous role, that of Max, in the Robert Wagner/Stephanie Powers crime show, Hart to Hart, for which he won a Golden Globe.

He died, aged 86, in Los Angeles.

George Everest died on this day 156 years ago, aged 76.

Born on this day, 1790.07.04; Colonel Sir George Everest, British (Welsh) surveyor and geographer, and the Surveyor General of India from 1830 through 1843. : r/Mountaineering

In 1806, Everest joined the East India Company, and left England for India. He would soon be assigned as a surveyor, beginning with a trip to Java in 1814, before returning to India two years later.

In 1818, Everest joined William Lambton in the Great Trigonometric Survey of India, who at that point was surveying the southern tip of the subcontinent. Lambton died in 1823, and Everest became the superintendent of the mission. In 1830, he would be appointed as the Surveyor General of India. The trigonometric arc from the southern tip to the northern border was completed in 1841. Everest would resign in 1842, and spent the rest of his days back in England.

While he did not explore the mountain known as "Peak 15" at the time, his successor, Andrew Waugh, did. With the help of an Indian mathematician named Radhanath Sikdar, Waugh wrote to the Royal Geographical Society in 1856 that they had determined it was the tallest peak in the world, and suggested naming it after his predecessor. That mountain was officially named "Mount Everest" in 1865, a year before Everest's death.

image.jpeg.78de0894b6923880a014fae37711ad7b.jpeg

It should be mentioned that Everest's surname was pronounced "Eve wrist", rather than "ever rest".

Marty Feldman died on this day 40 years ago, aged 48.

image.jpeg.03cac3712cc345636e88871c2814cf72.jpeg

Feldman was a comedian known for his bulging eyes, which came from a condition that was a complication of thyroid disease. This may have been worsened by a childhood injury, vehicle crashes, and botched attempts to fix it.

Originally wanting to be a musician, Feldman soon decided to become a comedian. In 1955, he made his first TV appearance on the show Showcase as part of the comedy troupe Morris, Marty and Mitch. Feldman would then become a scriptwriter on shows such as Bootsie and SnudgeRound the Horne, and The Frost Report, often collaborating with Barry Took. In 1967, Feldman made his official acting debut on At Last the 1948 Show alongside future Monty Python members John Cleese and Graham Chapman, as well as The Goodies star Tim Brooke-Taylor. Feldman would soon get some shows of his own, although they were short-lived.

Feldman's health was in a tumultuous state in the 1970s, and in 1974, he made his final appearance on British TV with Marty Back Together Again in response to claims of bad health. Produced by Dennis Main Wilson, Feldman performed a variety of sketches, including three Tom Lehrer songs ("Pollution", "National Brotherhood Week", and "The Vatican Rag")- Feldman had consulted Lehrer during the production of the special, and the songs were used as a musical interlude.

From there, Feldman took to acting in films, and became a close collaborator with Mel Brooks. He played Igor (Eye-gore) opposite Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein, and had a starring role in Silent Movie as Marty Eggs.

image.jpeg.8ff7e39d213cfb29425d70dd6df85ca8.jpeg

Feldman made one final TV appearance in a 1980 episode of The Muppet Show.

Feldman died of a heart attack during the production of the film Yellowbeard (written by and starring his colleague Graham Chapman, who was present with him). The film was dedicated in his memory.
