Actor James Dean died in a car crash today in 1955, aged just 24...

And is it me or has Dean's iconic status just dimmed a bit in the last decade or so?

I should imagine that most of the youth of today don't know who he is. And I didn't think he was that good anyway, a tad overrated.

Isn't this the Russ Abbot thread? He doesn't look a bit like him.

Maybe he would have if he had lived longer. Couldn't imagine him singing 'I love a party with a happy atmosphere...' though.

Isn't Heath Ledger slowly taking over his place as "Icon".

I don't think so... I haven't heard anyone mention his (Ledger's) name for quite some time now, which has certainly made me happy. Never saw what the big deal about him was.

A little premature. He actually died on October 4th, one day before the twentieth anniversary of the first broadcast of

Monty Python's Flying Circus...

Now it's twenty years since that anniversary, forty years overall.

Doesn't time fly?

Perhaps the cigarette companies have simply found a new, 'face of smoking'.

The brilliant Leonard Rossiter died 25 years ago today...

Funny how the memories play tricks. I swear Rossiter, Eric Morecambe and Tommy Cooper died in the same week. Just goes to

show how compressed the memory gets as time drifts by...

Avid fisherman and 14th President of the USA, Franklin Pierce, died of liver failure, after years of heavy drinking on this day in 1869.

fp14.gif

Pierce was arrested while in office for running over an old woman with his horse, but his case was dropped due to insufficient evidence. His wife Jane Appleton, a highly strung religious fanatic, is believed to have gone insane during his period in office and was kept well away from the public.

Nobel Peace Prize winner (1973) who refused his prize (because there was still no peace in his country, not because he had to share with Kissinger) died 19 years ago today (Oct 13th), a day before his 79th birthday.
