Also  just over a hundred years ago, one-time Inspector of Drains Percy French died aged 65.

He was one of Ireland's most gifted polymaths, an accomplished songwriter, and entertainer, and later was recognised as a gifted watercolourist.

Exactly a week after French's death, his songwriting partner Houston Collisson died, aged 54. Their most famous joint composition is "The Mountains O' Mourne".

This day in 1959 Buddy Holly, Big Bopper (Chantilly Lace) and Richie Valens (La Bamba) were killed in a plane crash, a date later immortalised as 'the day the music died' in Don McLeans's American Pie.

I'm sure you all know what Buddy Holly looks like (and if not, why not?).

It depends.  Were you talking about how he looked before or after the crash?

Exactly 100 years ago today muisc hall artiste George Formby died from tuberculosis, aged 45. His lungs had been badly affected by an accident in 1916 and he was further weakened by the 1918 flu pandemic.

Several  of his ideas were later adopted by his son. Charlie Chaplin's tramp character was also based on Formby's work.
