The spinal operation has been deemed a success:

http://www.noise11.com/news/ian-molly-meldrum-vertebra-operation-a-success-20120103

More significantly for this forum, "He has suffered horrific injuries from the fall. Ian will remain in ICU for the time being but as Yael says “he is no longer fighting for his life, he is fighting to get well”."

There's a Gary Ablett who's an Austrailian rules footballer.

http://en.wikipedia....Gary_Ablett,_Jr.

Both Ablett Sr and Ablett Jr are still alive according to wiki, couldn't find any other info when doing a search on google

Yes, there are two famous Aussie (AFL) footballers named Gary Ablett (father and son). Joke was intended for Australians only. (I think I'll sneak off stage before anymore rotten tomatoes are slung at me....)

PS - just to educate you, "our" Aussie Gary Ablett Sr has been a bad boy in the past, so it is not out of the realms of possibility that he would die young:

Hmm, smack, XTC, coke and speed. Mixing those is risky business. It's not quite clear to me whether mr Ablett kicked that habit, but if he does it again he may well be somebody to watch.

regards,

Hein

Speaking of drug-addled Australian footballers, the headline story tonight is that Ben Cousins is in a really bad way:

Troubled former AFL star Ben Cousins has reportedly been taken to a mental health hospital in Perth.

The West Australian newspaper says it is understood he was admitted to the psychiatric unit for his own safety.

The paper says Cousins was taken yesterday by ambulance to the Joondalup Health Campus mental health unit after a prolonged psychosis related to his battle with drug addiction.

Doctors treating Cousins reportedly committed the 33-year-old after he showed no sign of improvement following more than four days in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

Haven't heard anything for a while. He is wheelchair-bound these days, though.

Ian Turpie is dead! http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-03-11/ian-turpie-dies-at-age-68/3882506

I didn't realise he had been that ill, to be honest. (For you Poms, as well as being a B-grade Aussie celebrity game show host and stand-up comic, my Mum has just informed me he was also Olivia Newton-John's first boyfriend.)

Now that I have my internet reconnected a can start contributing again - Man I've lost so many canditdates that I considered this year it is crazy, I breifley thought of putting Turpie on my list but went with Ken James instead. Bert is definetely going on my list next year though.

Good to have you back, mate. Yes, Bert seems flakey. Apparently he liked a drink back in the day - my Dad bumped into him in a Melbourne pub a few times back in the 1960s and he was inevitably sliding under the table.

Will this FINALLY finish Gough off? Jim Callaghan only survived his wife 10 days after all...

More on Margaret for those who are interested: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-03-17/margaret-whitlam-obit/3894502

Gough was well enough to do a telephone interview and sounded okay for a man his age. Time will tell, though, since, as the guest above notes, elderly couples often die close to each other.
