Wow! Of course, the committee wouldn't listen to me and put him on this year's list. :banghead:
You must've known more about him and his condition than what I knew at the time (that he received radiation treatment for skin cancer), but I think it would've been unreasonable to put every major celeb with "skin cancer" on the list. That's not a very helpful term - since it encompasses a range of very different conditions, from almost innocuous, indolent basal cell carcinomas to metastatic melanoma; and I couldn't really find anything more specific on any major news site.

EDIT: This is what I read about him in November:

Benaud, 84, is receiving treatment for skin cancers on his forehead and the top of his head. "I'm coping with it very well - the doctors are pleased," Benaud said at the SCG. (...) I recommend to everyone they wear protection on their heads. Eighty-four-year olds don't seem to mend as well as they used to," he said.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-11-10/-benaud-undergoing-therapy-for-skin-cancer/5879558

Nothing about the cancer being terminal or his family preparing for the worst...

No, just that we needed a token Aussie for the list and that Benaud had been in decline since his car accident and had looked shocking for months. That's about as scientific as I get with these things. ;)

Wasn't receiving radiation treatment for skin cancer a bloody redundancy?

I just realised playwright Alan Seymour died last month. :(:(:(:(:(

http://www.smh.com.au/comment/obituaries/one-day-of-the-year-that-changed-writer-alan-seymours-life-20150325-1m67qx.html

He is most famous for his anti-Anzac Day play, The One Day of the Year. I saw it performed once and it is rightly regarded as an absolute classic.

I'd like to suggest 'Prince' Leonard Casley, Head of State the Hutt River Province, his self-proclaimed micronation which declared itself independent from the rest of Australia in 1970.

Casley is 90 now and and his wife, Princess Shirley, died a couple of years ago.

Well he was Australian and since there is not a cinematographers thread and I don't want to search pages back for an Oscar winners thread it seemed an appropriate place as any to post his death notice.

Jesse Williams, a 24 year old defensive tackle playing with the Seattle Seahawks (or not playing as he is yet to make his NFL debut) has been diagnosed with Type 2 papillary cell cancer of the kidney. He was born on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait and went to high school in Brisbane at Cavendish Rd High School where a good friend of mine teaches science and maths.

http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/jesse-williams-seattle-seahawks-player-diagnosed-with-kidney-cancer-2015195

From what I have just read, if it is in the early stages the 5 year survival rate of such a cancer may be above 80% but if there has been progression of the cancer then the survival rates drop dramatically. Surgery is scheduled. Apparently it is unusual for such a cancer to manifest in someone so young so there may be some underlying problem. Probably not that obit worthy (in the UK), unless he blogs/sets up a charity etc., but certainly a much higher profile athlete than Lauren Hill was before her illness and death.

The NFL is overwhelming the number 1 sport in terms of popularity in the US,so even a marginal player dying young is likely to scrape a Daily Mail Obit as was the case last year when Orlando Thomas died of ALS in his early 40's.

Can only go here I think. Bob Hornery, actor, 83. http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/theatre/performing-arts-community-mourns-neighbours-actor-and-melbourne-theatre-company-actor-bob-hornery-20150527-ghaix3.html

He was the Pilot in Dr Who's The Horns of Nimon (one of my faves).

or it could go in the sci fi thread, where it did go a few hours ago :)

Yep, it could. Only I posted 6 minutes before charon (no disrespect, he felt it should go there) however he was an honoured member of Melbourne Theatre Company and made many appearances in television and on the stage. I felt personally to consign his career and life to one episode of Dr Who by reference to that thread was to do the man and his life a disservice. He is entitled to be in any thread applicable and I have no difficulty with you or anyone else posting what I have already posted in such threads.

Seriously? The Horns of Nimon is one of your faves. I presume that this is an ironic approach for high camp fun rather than a genuine appreciation of the depth and character driven qualities of classics such as The Brain of Morbius, City of Death or The Robots of Death.

However, it is worth watching for Graham Crowden's death scene alone.

The Horns of Nimon is wonderfully entertaining. It might not be great TV, but I'd rather something be amusingly rubbish rather than pretentiously dark any day.
