That's sad. I only met him once, at a car manufacturers meeting at the SMMT. Great way to build cars - marine plywood bulkheads and GRP curvy outer panels.

In a similar vein about meeting people once, I'm thinking Paddy Hopkirk will really be getting on by now. On checking I find he is 81. And I was astounded to see him still pushing his brand in a business meeting back in 2004. Made of sturn stuff these old motor sports guys.

Every time I see someone has posted something new here I think "now THIS is the Jules Bianchi death finally being announced" only to be disappointed again and again. I almost backed off his name due to concerns his family might keep France's National Vegetable alive for no reason. Shoulda followed those instincts.

Alonso's bang on the head has ruled him out of the first Grand Prix this year.

Likely to live, mind.

A colleague of mine said he received an e-mail from Paddy Hopkirk last week.

So, the rop link is a spectacular and very wet crash from Rally Mexico a few days ago.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsbqH6s_lcE

and, for real heroics, watch the M Sport mechanics in action here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfM_cPD1Clo

The car was back on the road for the next section.

M Sport, incidentally, is just down the road from Maryport, thought I'd, like, mention that.

Michael Schumacher's son survived a 100mph (ish) accident a couple of days ago. If he'd been seriously injured Mrs Schumacher could have had two veg with every meal.

I was thinking about posting the news of his son beginning to race here. I mean, what is going on in that family? Can't they try something safer?

I think the actual continued quoting of The Fast Show is what should have people getting their coats thrown at them

Jann Mardenborough had a very nasty crash today at the 'Ring. Killed a sectator and injured 4 others.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FryDyx9L2dQ

I may not be the most morbid person here (or maybe so), but I was hoping for a little more from that video than I got, particularly as pertains to a sectator [sic] being killed. Isn't that Youtub's job, to do the rubber-necking for us?

YouTube also have the crash from another angle (Ali's post re the squashed chair above is an indication).

It's 4:30am and I can't sleep wondering what the Coat of Arms for the surname 'Boocock' must look like.

Yes I come from a nation that offers up Dick Trickle, but Trickle in and of itself is harmless. What the history/lineage of the name Boocock could possibly be I do not know.

Saw this posted on the general deaths thread for the year:

I'm not clued up enough to know this but...

What's the average age of TT riders these days, because quite a few of the fatalities seem to be at the upper age limit end of competitive motor sports.

Average age is probably 38/39, but due to the unique nature of the course age and experience usually outweighs youth and enthusiasm.
