After the deaths of Qaboos of Oman and Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber last year one might think that the Arabian Peninsula doesn't have much frail leaders left. However, there are multiple:

Ones that likely do not have any power anymore:

Salman (1935-) King of Saudi Arabia since 2015. Urinary tract surgery in 2006, was apparently sick for three years from 2008 to 2011 during which he also had a spinal surgery. Suffered a stroke around 2019? and has had Alzheimer's for years. However he sometimes still attends events.

Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (1948-2022) UAE President, Ruler of Abu Dhabi since 2004. Suffered a stroke in 2014 and has "assumed a lower profile in state affairs" which is a nicer way of saying that he's very likely a zombie whose fortune was spread among members of his family the year after his stroke. "Ceremonial appearances" seem to happen around once a year or less nowadays. Rumored to be very sick this year.

Also worth keeping an eye on:

Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa (1950-) Emir (1999-2002) and King (since 2002) of Bahrain. Both his father and grandfather died aged 67, he's now 71. On the other hand his uncle lived to 85, but longevity has been rare in that family.

Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah (1937-2023) Emir of Kuwait since 2020. Looks well under his age, but certainly won't rule as long as his predecessor.

Bonus:

Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah (1940-) Crown Prince of Kuwait. At the age of 80 or 81, he is the oldest Crown Prince in the world and has a healthy round face.

Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani (1952-) Emir of Qatar 1995-2013, now sometimes called Emir Father. Handed over power to his son in 2013 and rumored to be in poor health, hospitalised with covid in April 2020 but survived it.

Saudi media reporting the death of Prince Saud bin Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud.

A minor royal by all means but thought it worth posting given that he was only in his 20s/30s, and no cause has been stated.

Cross-posting because…why not.

Founder of Morkaz Arabic and Islamic Training Centre, Agege, Lagos  State, Sheikh Adam Abdullah Al Ilory’s first son, Ridwanullah, is dead.

He died in Lagos on Saturday morning.

Sheikh Ridwanullah, who died of an undisclosed ailment, was survived by five children.

“Yes, he is dead. He died after Sahur (the meal consumed early in the morning by Muslims before fasting). We have prayed on him. We are about to inter him,” one of his family members said.

Sheikh Ridwanullah, who is also the late Adam Abdullah Al Ilory’s first child, is a respected Islamic cleric in Yorubaland.

The Crown Prince of Kuwait has fallen ill, but doing okay:

As far as I know Nawaf, the Emir himself is very ill and transferred most of his powers to the Crown Prince in November. He has spent a lot of time abroad for treatment, most recently was on a "special vacation" last month.

Here's a picture of both of them last month

Emir Nawaf is the thin one.

Kuwait also has Sheikh Salem Al-Ali Al-Sabah, Chieftain Dean of the House of Sabah who is around 95 or 96 and has been very frail for the last decade. Mentioned him in Non-British Royals a while ago due to him (possibly) being an older royal than QEII.

Not sure if I have posted this great video of him with the late Emir Sabah in 2019, he's the guy in the wheelchair:

Kuwaiti Sheikh Fawaz Duaij Al-Salman Al-Homoud Al-Sabah dead.

Kuwait's Emir Nawaf (mentioned above) has again been in Italy for "private visits". Here's the image of him returning a few weeks ago:

He had four "private visits" to Italy in 2022.

As the Saudi royals keep dropping like flies, I thought I would post a list of the remainder of Ibn Saud's 45 sons and their various health ailments:

  • King Abdullah (1924, lots of surgeries, strokes? dementia?)

From what I understand Mamdouh is a pretty minor name and also in frail health.

Saudi Arabia doesn't currently have much major older Sheikhs/royals. Kuwait's got that one very frail guy in his late 90s but also many others and former Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Saad's widow Sheikha Latifa (Arabic wiki) is still alive, 86 this year. Bahrain has a few, Sheikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa and someone a bit older who I can't remember right now. UAE has multiple nonagenarians/octogenarians, Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan the oldest at 96/97.

One interesting Arab royal name is Buthaina bint Taimur, half-Japanese Omani royal.

Turns out this is fake news, or at least a misunderstanding on Wikipedia.

The source refers to Abdullah bin Saud bin Abdulaziz, an obscure member of the Royal Court. Not the brother of Salman.

I know this mishaps occurr very often for Saudi royals, but articles like this refer to him as "the 16th son of ibn Saud". Is there an official denial/clarification?

If you take the Arabic version of his name from Wiki and type it into Google, there is only one news source that comes up under that spelling of the name (and it looks like a pretty amateur news site). All the other hits from the past 24 hours are bot type sites.

Also the editors on Arabic Wiki are generally pretty quick to add death dates and his page is unchanged.

I think it's definitely mistaken identity. There are over 15000 members of the Saudi Royal Family, so it's not surprising that this happens often.

Sheikh Salem was obese most of his life and has been wheelchairbound for around two decades ...

...

However he's outlived tons of younger Kuwaiti royals. Not complaining, he seems like possibly one of the best Sheikhs in the Arabian Peninsula, mostly very active in charity causes and his daughter Sheikha Intisar is a known social entrepreneur, philanthropist, author, film producer and columnist.

Sheikha Intisar is an interesting personality. She's suffered from PTSD since the Iraqi Invasion of Kuwait, in addition to that stuff mentioned in the quoted post she's worked with UN's Sustainable Development Goals program and founded atleast three non-profit organisations, the Intisar Foundation that helps women affected by war and trauma in the Arab World, etc, helped make the Arabian Peninsula a slightly better place. Major name in Kuwait, but only 58 and hopefully not a pool possibility soon.

Here with her father Sheikh Salem around 2019 or 2020, picture from her Instagram account:

thesheikh.thumb.jpg.119220669d1c10ffc381627bc495b417.jpg

Sheikh Salem's donated a lot to charities too and usually donates in millions. His net worth is likely in billions as he's been getting rich from the oil since the 1950s.

Also, that dead Saudi Arabian prince seemingly turned out to be a son of King Saud who was the successor (and son) of Ibn Saud/King Abdulaziz. I can understand how he was confused with that son of Ibn Saud.

Emir Nawaf, ruler of Kuwait had another (according to flight info on twitter two-week long) private visit to Italy last month. I wonder how long this will continue, how many more "private visits"...

This source reports the death of Sheikh Mubarak Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah (wiki?) on Thursday.

His English wiki page was briefly edited as dead with a source 2 days ago but it was removed. If it's the same bloke, he was the 7th Prime Minister of Kuwait between 2011-2019.

Is it the correct Sheikh?

And Kuwait's Emir Nawaf back to Italy, another private visit

Nawaf, who'll be 86 this month, has been said to suffer from stomach cancer for more than two years now and has had five to ten of these trips since becoming Emir in 2020. They seem fully prepared for his death, the eighty-something Crown Prince Mishal (half-brother of Nawaf) fully took over his duties already over a year ago and Nawaf's son Ahmad Nawaf (who is around 67 and currently the Prime Minister) will likely become the Crown Prince after Nawaf dies.
