Krzysztof Penderecki, according to the Guardian, "Poland's greatest living composer" unable to attend one of his 85th birthday concerts for "personal reasons":

Reminds me of Pierre Boulez - on the other hand, maybe he's just sad about the state of health of Jean-Louis Trintignant.

When Chuck Penington died last week, the Intergeneration Orchestra of Omaha (Nebraska) lost the only conductor it ever had.  The orchestra, which is the only one of its kind in the country, paired musicians who are older than 50 with those younger than 25.  Penington was with the Intergeneration Orchestra for 30 years. He also spent 30 years with Chip Davis and Mannheim Steamroller as a keyboardist and conductor.

He was injured on Labor Day weekend, had intensive rehabilitation and appeared to be recovering. He was able to ride nine hours to his son’s wedding in Milwaukee at the end of September, his wife said. But he had lingering troubles from the accident and died Nov. 21 at the age of 73.

A most excellent suggestion. Glass, Reich, Part and Boulez are all doing well at the moment, but there are others of similar vintage;

We all know about Elliott Carter, who made a sprightly century last December, but

Henri Dutilleux is 93

John Gardner is 92

Gyorgy Kurtag is 83

Hans Werner Henze is 82, as is John Joubert

Einojuhani Rautavaara is 81

Peter Sculthorpe is 80

All, save for Gardner, are still working. There are others, but It'd just get boring

However, MiB, Carl Andre - he of the bricks - is a mere 73

John Joubert reportedly dead at 91:

Norman Schweikert was a longtime horn player for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, who also taught at Northwestern University.

Nationally recognized for his research into the lives of U.S. orchestra musicians, Schweikert also was one of the founding members of the International Horn Society.

“Norman spent most of his 26 CSO years playing second horn, in the middle of the section, facilitating cohesion and unity,” said CSO acting principal horn Dan Gingrich, who worked alongside Schweikert for 22 years.

Schweikert, 81, died of congestive heart failure Dec. 31, and was married for 57 years.

"Legrand first won an Academy Award in 1969 for the song The Windmills of Your Mind".
What a great song.  Didn't realize who the composer was, or that they were still alive.  Sad news.

His 1984 Hindemith and Mendelssohn records are superb! I almost killed my wife with his Mendelssohn (bad speakers)

Buy, steal, copy etc. his Mendelssohn CD! It'll annoy your neighbours
