Minimalists (and other classical composers/musicians)

Recommended Posts

Perhaps it's time to drop "Minimalists" from the thread title, as "Classical Composers and Musicians" is an adequate description, and clearer.

Also composed the soundtrack for The Shining.

Edit: Well, his compositions were used for the movie. He didn't specifically make them for the film.

https://www.spiegel.de/kultur/musik/peter-jonas-ist-tot-a-7cbe400b-ef00-4bd6-a54f-5d536a4df4d6 (german link)

Especially prominent in Bavaria and Austria, but also the odd work in the UK, especially for the English National orchestra.

Was my classical Theme Team joker in the DDP last year (sigh). Unique pick in the DDP this time (not mine).

A GoFundMe has been set up for composer and trumpeter Jon Hassell. His friends and family write on the page, “Now, at 83, because of long-term health issues, Jon is in a dire position and needs financial assistance to ensure a safe and sustainable living situation going forward.” The note continues, “As Jon is in the highest risk group for COVID-19, the urgency of his condition has become even more acute in recent weeks.”

One of my favourite artists.... is also a sub for my Windy City team.

I didn't like to read it, but he's been in shaky health for years now. But then, at 83, what can you do...

Anton Kontra, a Hungarian-born, Scandinavian violinist, leader of the Kontra Quartet and concertmaster, has died. He was 88. (I'm not sure the URL of the death notice below pays him much respect, given his demise is paired with a music giveaway.)

Myroslav Skoryk, Ukrainian composer has died aged 81. His most famous piece is 'Melody in A Minor' from the  film High Mountain Pass, said to be 'the spiritual hymn of Ukraine'. It was recently performed by a group of musicians under lockdown (Second video in the link, begins approx 50 seconds in).

His most recent composition was 'I am with you' written to support the Chinese in the fight against coronavirus, recorded earlier this year.

Jon Hassell set to release a new album... but then I wonder how much of this is just a (admittedly modest) cash grab:

https://pitchfork.com/news/jon-hassell-announces-new-album-shares-new-song-fearless-listen/

The picture in that article looks as if he had a stroke, with the hanging side of the mouth. And he does look almost dead now.
