Jon Hassell set to release a new album... but then I wonder how much of this is just a (admittedly modest) cash grab:

https://pitchfork.com/news/jon-hassell-announces-new-album-shares-new-song-fearless-listen/

The picture in that article looks as if he had a stroke, with the hanging side of the mouth. And he does look almost dead now.

So they say Jon Hassell's medical emergency was breaking his leg:

https://www.theguardian.com/music/2020/jul/28/jon-hassell-musics-great-globetrotter-be-more-aware-of-the-rest-of-the-world

Curious though why his GoFundMe says that "regaining his weight" is a top priority.

Leon Fleisher, a celebrated pianist who was just 16 when he debuted at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic, recording his first album at 25 as he delved into Franz Schubert compositions, has died. He was 92.

Violinist Erich Gruenberg, once the leader of many orchestras, including the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, died at 95 years:

https://www.thestrad.com/news/the-violinist-erich-gruenberg-has-died/11076.article

He also recorded orchestral parts with The Beatles, who had him wear a fake gorilla paw over his bow hand.

Ah would that be A Day In The Life?

Edit: Ah I see it's in the story. I flick through my Beatles stuff on the loo from time to time. Not named but now I know....

The first chord change in John Cage's 'As Slow As Possible' in 7 years has taken place in Germany, but frustratingly it doesn't mention from what to what. I'm really hoping it was from G#+7th to D♭-9th; that'd 'really liven those stiffs up a bit'.

Hopefully it'll be included on 'Now That's What I Call Minimalism Vol 58' in 640 years' time.

The 'big four' minimalist composers are all edging towards their mid-70s. I wonder who'll be the first to reach the end of the drone?

LaMonte Young

Terry Riley

Steve Reich (in the afternoon)

Philip Glass

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eleven years after starting this thread, all four of the 'classical CSNY' still have a pulse. Not very successful picking by me, but thankfully it was adapted for wider use.
They're all  83-85 now, but no health scares/reports even, as far as I can see.
I'm going for this order: Young, Reich, Riley Glass, Ringo.
I'll be back in 11 years to check.
Its clearly the month for nonagenarians on my long list to be releasing statements on coronavirus.
Mikis Theodorakis's views on Artists, lockdowns and governments being twats.
He was also able to give a short statement on Glezos's death.
Theodorakis is and Glezos was a repicient of the Lenin Peace Prize.
There are only four people alive who were awarded the prize after Glezos's death (yes, it ended with the Soviet Union in 1991):
Mikis Theodorakis (b. 1925) Greek composer and lyricist,
Sam Nujoma (b. 1929) Namibian president and revolutionary
Martti Ahtisaari (b. 1937) Finnish president and nobel peace prize winner. Survived COVID this year.
Angela Davis (b. 1944) American political activist
Louis Andriessen has Alzheimer's and vascular dementia: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nu.nl/muziek/6094441/componist-louis-andriessen-81-lijdt-aan-dementie.amp (in Dutch) . He finished his last piece last year, but entered a care facility in march this year. In interviews from 2 years ago he sounded extremely lucid and erudite, so I guess his decline is pretty fast paced.
Proper avant garde and minimalist, American composer Harold Budd being reported dead:
Looks like he was in London earlier this year.  Doesn't appear to have a mention on the Forum up to now.
That's sad.
I especially like "The Pearl", an album he made with Brian Eno. The album is a real gem ... or pearl.
Israeli violinist Ivry Gitlis dead at 98:
https://www.i24news.tv/en/news/israel/1608817435-israel-s-violin-genius-ivry-gitlis-dies-at-98
A-list name in these circles. Heavily under consideration for my old classical music theme team, but he was very active all the time. But it seems he declined pretty fast.
