Toast 16,155 Posted November 8, 2014 I went to the Imperial War Museum yesterday to look at the World War I art exhibition. I saw this painting by Christopher Nevinson, and thought of you, LFN. http://www.bbc.co.uk/arts/yourpaintings/paintings/nerves-of-the-army-6073
Magere Hein 1,400 Posted November 8, 2014 I saw this painting by Christopher Nevinson, and thought of you, LFN. So that's how they use those target poles. These are similar target poles used in shooting contests by a schutterij, bits of folklore in Dutch and Belgian Limburg. As pictured they're not being used. Nevinson's picture makes clear how that is done. I wonder what those wires are that the target soldiers are fiddling with. regards, Hein
Lord Fellatio Nelson 6,219 Posted November 8, 2014 Those wires we call drop wires. Back in those days they were solid copper wire which were tightened with a ratchet. When I started on British Telecom, as it was back then, there were still customers served by "open wires" from poles to houses. There is still the odd pole with cross arms on it but they are virtually gone now. Those little pots on those poles are ceramic. Those were the days!!!

John Kettley 49 Posted March 25, 2015 I'm pleased Jeremy Clarkson has been sacked and that a spurious petition hasn't saved him. He punched a fellow employee in the face - that should cost anyone their job, however much money they rake in for their bosses. I suppose he's free to seek gainful employment as a UKIP candidate now. Tomorrow - overcast with 73% chance of light rain.

Would you need to pack a pair of brown trousers for climbing those things, I wonder? Also, did anyone ever fall of them? Can imagine some sneaky nut working out the exact height to fall and survive for a compo job if no win no fee had been a thing back then?

charon 4,943 Posted April 24, 2015 Zorders a ginge ? Explains a hooruva lot...... Anyhoo, an update to 'me going fishing for a living' posts on the 'all is wonderful ' thread..... Been about 7 weeks, and have only did 2 trips. First for 7 days, awake 20 hours a day, total wage =£500 Second, we went out in gales to try and get the march on everyone who were still tied up. Bad timing....we were miles away when a days fishing "hit", steamed constantly and cried off after 7 days (meant to be 10)..... Total wage =£150. Subtract kennel fees @£200 means I am skint , PayPal donations accepted. The itinerary for the 2nd trip shows how mental it was (force7+ first 2 days, nw as well.....not good). Sunday night - Ullapool (pints in seaforth) Monday night - Stornoway (in driving snow) (pints in Lewis Bar) Tuesday night - Stornoway (still in driving snow, couldn't get away because it bkew up some more, plus, lol, they had ran out of fuel at the pier)(pints in McNeil's) Wednesday night - Gairloch (no pints as arrived at 10pm and away at midnight) Thursday night - Ullapool again. (Seaforth pintage). Friday night - Uig on Skye (pints at nearest hotel- 2 hours, but messy as fuck) Saturday night - Aultbea (Aultbea hotel drinkypoos) Sunday night - back to Ullapool in disgust (wrecked in Seaforth). That was last wage 3 weeks ago. Snow forecast tonight Good career move !! Edit to add.... 10/20/30 years ago, that 'could've' been my holiday journeys

RadGuy 1,614 Posted May 1, 2015 I have a day off today. In Poland, May 1st is Workers' Day, May 2nd is Flag Day and May 3rd is Constitution Day. Normally, I'd have 5 days off, but I only have 3 because two of those days are on the weekend
Bibliogryphon 9,589 Posted May 1, 2015 Well while the rest of Europe celebrates May Day on 1st May in the UK we get the first Monday in May off because Thatcher hated the Socialist Holiday. Which means I have to go to a meeting in Brussels on Monday even though I should be on holiday.
RadGuy 1,614 Posted June 5, 2015 After 4 years in my parents' country (Poland), I'm moving back to the Chicago area (where I was born) on July 5, 2015. I'm so excited. I love America.
RadGuy 1,614 Posted July 5, 2015 And today is the day! I am soon going to board the plane from Rzeszow to Warsaw, and after that from Warsaw to Chicago O'Hare. I might be inactive for the next couple o' days.
