Jailed australian rapist Mustafa Kayirici, 29, supposedly only has a few months left to live:

He was described by the Daily Mail as a "face-tattoed serial sex monster" and "ice addict" in 2020.

Spent 50 years in prison and apparently will live in LA. How he'll adjust to modern society I don't know.

It's worth noting that the Governor of California ultimately has to sign off for the parole to go through. Considering that he is facing a recall in two weeks and probably doesn't want to take a chance at anything that could garner negative headlines, I think there's a stronger than remote chance that he'll veto parole anyway.

That's not going to happen. There's simply no reason to keep someone this old in prison after he has been there for 53 years. And he won't need to adjust to modern life since he's likeky going straight to a nursing anyway.

I agree, there is no reason in the actual context of the situation, but that doesn't preclude more cynical, politically advantageous reasons.

In any case, I think there's enough leeway with the timetable here that the Governor doesn't have to act before the recall (September 14) anyway, so he can kick the can down the road for now regardless of what he does.

Leslie Van Houten would beg to differ

Oh aye, and...

Was reading about the Lambeth Slavery case today, as you do.

So far as I can tell the main instigator - jailed for imprisonment, sexual  assault and generally being a complete twat is still with us. Comrade Bala will be around 81, he'll be around 98 if he survives his complete sentence.

I'm not sure how much of his frailty is fake. He's a very sick person.

Here around ten days ago...

I've seen hospice patients that looked much healthier.

Also, world's longest-serving ever prisoner Francis Clifford Smith got to 97 this month. He's been behind bars for 71 years and 101 days.

Article about this man.

Greenwich Time reported that he escaped from prison in 1967 and he was released on parole for 10 months before committing a violation that put him back behind bars in 1975.  He also appealed for a new trial in the 1950s and made a further appeal in the 60s but was unsuccessful both times.  The length of his sentence has brought into question the purpose of holding people when they get to a certain age.

Zachary Frey, a Cornell University senior and freelance writer from Greenwich who has been researching Smith and other longtime prisoners, said to Greenwich Time that his case should be considered something of a mystery.  "I don't know what the appropriate punishment should be - and there's a lot of evidence he didn't shoot Grover Hart - but he served it decades ago," Frey said.

Richard Sparaco, executive director of the Board of Pardons and Paroles, said: "Someone like that I would think at this point, is extremely 'institutionalized.' He has no sense of what the real world out there looks like."

Finally got sentenced. That "life" in prison may be a short one.
