The conductor Sir Roger Norrington has just celebrated his 75th birthday, there will be a concert held in his honour next Monday. In a recent interview with The Times he spoke of his ongoing cancer battle.

 

Norrington is used to being a man on a mission. For one thing, there is the rather astonishing fact that he's been battling skin cancer and a brain tumour for more than 15 years. Only the work of a controversial New York specialist, he says, has enabled him to reach his 75th birthday (the great man will be there on Monday to admire his patient in action). “The great thing about the programme I'm on is that I'm attacking the cancer all the time. Six times a day I take eight pills of enzymes, so I've got it constantly on the back foot.”

 

The pills won't work forever, he's worth knowing about.

The senses can go one at a time with motor neurone disease. That'd be fitting for a bloke inclined to hang his victims down a dark drain, leaving them to contemplate the end in helpless isolation, long before said end arrived.

This one might be a bit offbeat but I think it's worth a shout. According to an interview with Eddie Butler of the 1948 Irish Grand Slam side, or those surviving, Jack Kyle, the outhalf, and considered generally to be the greatest Rugby player to ever don the Irish jersey, is suffering from bone marrow cancer. Given that he is 83 years old, there is surely not long left in the tank.
