Is The Deathlist Dying?

Recommended Posts

Well I'll certainly miss Godot around the traps. [insert waiting for Godot pun here.]

Maybe you read English languaged books in your spare time (I don't),

You say that like it's a bad thing. The OED really is a great read.

The Death List regenerates - it has a few more chances to cheat death yet!

As an observation, we're not getting as much Google juice as we used to so there is much less new blood happening by.

Anyone else realize the ironic fact that Godot left the forum because of a lack in stimulating debate...and in doing so has sparked that which he yearned for?

That's exactly what I thought. That might have been Godot's intention all along, he'll probably come back as NewGodot or something. Let's wait for Godot (no pun intended)!

In the meantime, let's discuss the dying DL further. I agree that things are not as sparkling as they used to be. I'm far from a heavy poster, but many threads are bleeding dead too soon, due to a sheer lack of enthousiasm. But is that a bad thing? DL is what it is, if people can't be bothered to come and post, that's their good right and it's a natural thing. There will be new Godots or Iains (God forbid), like new-kid-on-the-block Vaagheid.

Sorry Godot, you will be missed, but life moves on. I find that a very encouraging idea though, and very DL-like.

I've got a cunning plan to address that, but on a more general note; Paul Hunter's demise taught us that not all Google juice is good.

Ah, what the heck are you typing Godot. You can't just up and leave like this.

Like Notapotato said - met you just the once & found you to be a really nice chap and I for one was very happy to know you.

What ever you do from now on, I trust you will be trully happy in both mind and soul.

I for one, will always be "waiting for Godot".

Maybe we should let the ranters back in. They were fun at times.

Is the Deathlist dying? I don't think so. Maybe if you're posting thousands of times and this is your only human interaction then maybe I could see that it isn't stimulating enough. As one of the slogans goes "I need to get a life". The Deathlist is something I came across several years ago when I was researching for my Death League team and I've found it informative and occasionally interesting. Some of the posters are funny, challenging and have been fun to argue with. It's also where I discovered the Derby Dead Pool and that been fun. Miss Godot? I don't think so. If people are interested in discussing the relative chances of celebrity demises this should be the place. We can all access the news stories but I think that it's been interesting to read how other dead poolers judge things. I've also enjoyed being exposed to some people and opinions from outside the US. Regarding the issue of a swear filter, I think people should express themselves however they like but if you can't do it without using a bunch of cuss words, I feel sorry for you. All in all, Deathlist should remain a place to have some fun and find out about good candidates. If you're looking for social stimulation, isn't face to face a lot better?

Ian McCaskill said face to crotch social interaction was a lot better.

Yeah, but he's a bit of a dwarf, so he'd be happy with that....after all, Dale Winton's a tall bloke. :(

This is a great site for research and interaction. I think that the drop off has been in the crappy ranters. I think this site is better now for sharing info. It also has seemed to move to more an international focus which I like but some might not. Not as many discussions of local crimes.

I take the opposite view, Paul Hunter's carkage showed exactly why we need the juice!

Are we ready to put on our reading glasses? Ahha.

The veteran journalist liked to quietly feast on his sausage while writing by candlelight near the midnight hour. The concept of work first and play later never seemed to register in his psyche. Godot's thoughts seemed to be memories rather than anything of the now and his viewpoint of all things made him seem like that of a weathered individual, someone who only speaks the language of the past. He remembered the days when they only sold records, the days where game shows ruled television and when comic books were for the ultra creative outcast. He missed people and he missed conversations too. But despite the fact that Godot's life was falling into a mid-life depression, he found a place that he could call home somewhere down the road of obscurity itself. There he arrived at the scene of Deathlist.net, a place where he could speak freely about squid and the pattern of the bricks.

Godot died back on the 28th after a few sips of what was originally thought to be lemonade. He seemed in good spirits and encouraged reform.

He also set up a folding table and poured several cups of what was believed to be the same lemonade for all the other members of the forum.

Is he a hero or a coward? "Man, I can never tell".

My thoughts:

I did not neglect to read Godot's sensible complaint about lack of circulation and how the interest in DL seems to have gone cold. I admit that some of his complaints were responsible for driving me away from posting. Too many birthday greetings, too many double posts by "spammers", too many posts left unanswered. Obituary hunters running wild and the essential personality's of the forum seem to have faded out to Facebook or twitter or somewhere that I believe to be fake, places that I've seldom gone and have never been a fan of. Wherever they may have went, they (or most of them) are certainly not investing anything creative\informative\entertaining out here where morbid media burns bright. Godot found what's inside himself on Deathlist.net and that's emptiness. Is he all alone? Maybe the reader should ask himself\herself that question.

But hope survives where emptiness dwells. Godot is like the maniac on the street with all the answers but so wacked out that he can never put anything into motion. The feel Godot gives off reminds me of a character in the film "Rescue Dawn" named Gene DeBruin, who was basically kept prisoner for much too long. After finally agreeing to escape, he ignored the plot in which he agreed on with all the other prisoners. When Dieter confronts him and says "Where the fu-ck were you?' Gene simply just wanders off in his own little world, finally free but showing absolutely no sympathy for the others. Godot's like him in a way, he tells us what he misses and what he wants, but selfishly chooses to fade away instead of making it happen. Godot's latest manifestation isn't showing dignity and it's certainly not showing anyone respect, it's borderline pathetic, it's a dreamer who chose suicide, that's what it is. If you want to make this forum a better place you should make quality contributions on a consistent basis and try to spell check what you have posted. Keep it real, keep it interesting, keep it raw. Nobody is perfect but it's the effort which counts. I think we need more 'real" on Deathlist. I often feel that everyone here is like a bunch of estranged neighbors who wave artificially but simply continue to live here for their own selfish\deceptive reasons. It almost reminds me of a wealthy neighborhood in suburban New Jersey. Now don't get me wrong, keeping it real shouldn't be about persuading others to crack one liners about private parts. How's it going Ms. Bazarr? I read what Star Crossed wrote, he said that he's alone, that he's very alone. Star Crossed's alone just like Godot was. The attack stooped at a low level but at least he made a solid point. I believe that freedom of speech is the best way of communicating for all intended purposes but that doesn't mean you should exploit yourself in the most vulgar and most classless way possible. Show some respect for others and yourself. It makes sense. Even if you have never done it before.

Final thoughts on Godot:

Godot was one of the few regular posters who actually possessed some form of writing talent (besides Señor Honez and a few others). I liked the way he opened up a post: Dorothy Parker was told of the death of the famously taciturn US President Calvin Coolidge, she replied: "How can they tell?" for example. Godot himself was a thinker, one who never felt discouraged to exercise the mind. A strong vocabulary and a hunger for debate, the elder statesman never backed down. I always thought he was very full of himself though and that his ignorance came alive when ever a debate did. There is a saying "I'm from Missouri - prove me wrong" and that should be written in bold on Godot's gravestone. Anybody who denies the moon landing's is living in their own world, it's either that or maybe I've been living in my own world all this time. I admit that in a sense Godot reminded me of myself, in fact, we may have even shared the same taste in women. What aggravates me the most is that he decided to lay down and die like a coward. If you hate to see something die and you choose death, that means you have given in. I dare someone to tell me that I'm wrong. "That's defeatist talk" Godot once cried and with his recent complaint it's obvious one can never win with words like that. But Godot has forever worn the mask of a hypocrite, somebody who sits in endless doubt and memorizes his post count like a wedding anniversary. Post count (to him) translated to cholesterol and in some way it actually did. I mean we should post consciously but let's all be honest with ourselves. Do you know why you care?

Already I can hear the cheers and the screams, a very mixed reaction but I hear somebody telling me to go way.

But the truth hurts doesn't it? Godot cares about his post count because it represents the deterioration of his life. It's over - so he thinks. He doesn't believe in his life anymore, this kept him for a while, but he was ashamed of it. Deathlist must have never been a hobby but instead some form of distraction. None of this has ever really been about death or being friendly. I'm afraid that I can't tell you what the rest is about, Godot will have to go make an appointment with a specialist: like the bathroom mirror for example. In the end, all I know is that his demise proves his insecurities and his selfishness. His loss will definitely leave a void on this forum, even if it's a void that we pretend is not there. Goodnight Nick Clooney. Between life and death there is the other place that you'll be, it'll be here on the nights that you can't sleep. Snacking on unusual fruit and reading in the silence.

I apologize for making a post at such a great length. I don't plan on doing it again. Almost 7 months .. I needed my fix. I hope everyone liked the post.

And don't drink the lemonade.

So, what brings him back, dumped by a dwarf or released from the facility? Anyone hazard a guess? Winner gets free pizza.

Publicising a return is just as obnoxious as announcing a retirement.
