I just heard John Peel the Radio 1 DJ has died on holiday in Peru, aged 65. Bit of a shocker that one!

DWB :referee:

Yeah, great pity, quite liked him...could his last song played on radio be ' Spirit in the sky ' ?....

'tis indeed very sad news

A top bloke if ever there was one and tough to find amusing puns about his demise especially now Anubis has used that one... :)

A real, real shame. Peely really was quite unique.

But, I have no choice but to say, that he is a bit of a 'dead beat'.

For once I'm actually quite shocked and saddened. John Peel was unique and never let age get in the way of his love of new musical trends.

Perhaps we could start a Celebrity DJ Deathlist in his honour. I'll start the ball rolling with Alan "Is he still breathing?" Freeman and Tony "the bastard never paid me for washing his car" Blackburn.

RIP John

Seems like the most opportune time to use the :) icon.

Not often that all deathlisters are unanimous in their lamenting.......

Deeply shocked here too! With him and Robert Merrill gone in the same week, there will be some damn good sounds heard beyond those pearly gates from now on!

He is (was) one of those people you assume would always be around. Unlike his contemporary, Sir Jim of Stoke Mandeville, for whom swap the word "assume" in the above sentence with "lament"...

:D Yep, a genuine shocker alright. I was just listening to his Home Truths programme a couple of weeks ago, and he sounded on top form as usual.

Disclaimer: I'm not a regular Radio 4 listener, honest...

Just to finish this thread - a quote I ripped off from somewhere else...

"If God is a DJ, he's just lost his job".

Yeah, I heard that he was diabetic too, but only after he died. I guess it wasn't something he needed to share with everyone, but I was surprised to hear it. Didn't seem to get in the way of business at the Big Chill - we (the crowd) was pleased enough with his performance

 A magnificent performance from the carrier bag man

Its always bit disappointing to see those shambling music figures turn themselves into respectable celebrity types in older age (John Lydon ? )...no such disappointment with Mark E Smith ;)

Wonder if we'll see Pete Doherty on Newsnight in about 20 years time giving a touching tribute following Zane Lowe's shock demise ;)

John Peel Day

Not quite sure why it is 13th October, given he died on the 25th :)
