2020:

Jan - Neil Peart / Kobe Bryant. Third would be Nicholas Parsons I guess. Unless I'm forgetting somebody. I'm definitely putting Neil first though.

For me: Terry Jones
Who it should be: Neil Peart
Who it really is: Kobe Bryant in a landslide (no pun intended)

Terry Jones

A tough one - in the UK Jones or Parsons but Kobe was still a big story due to the nature of his death. In the US 100% Kobe.

On a personal level, Terry Jones, but Kobe Bryant is definitely the most significant. Honestly, it's safe to say that in America, he'll probably be the biggest death (or one of the biggest deaths) of the year. It seems too early to say that, but my fellow Americans are already comparing Kobe's death to the death of someone like Michael Jackson.

But not as well known worldwide.

I hate to say it but Kobe Bryant was probably better known worldwide in 2020 than Terry Jones.

Jones was #1 for me, though.

I would always place the significance of a creative genius ahead of a sporting one.  Their legacy is more lasting.

I had no idea who Terry Jones was (or a Monty Python for that matter, still unsure wtf it is) in fact I thought he was a woman before I googled him. Not a lot of people under 30 know who they are. And yes, I am in the UK, but I’m not closed minded or ignorant enough to completely write him off as a nobody just because I hadn’t heard of him. Like a lot of people on here did with Kobe.

Fame is often subjective and depends what you were exposed to when growing up and your interests, you can debate until you’re blue in the face about who’s more significant, but it’s a complete waste of energy.
