Talented musician and a good friend of mine, way too young (67).

This is why 'Most Significant Death' stuff is a waste of time. It's impossible for people to agree on who is the most significant.

1. JD Salinger did fuck all for 30 years.

2. Alexander Haig had been retired for about 20 odd years.

3. Peter who?

4. Lech who?

5. Are actors really that significant?

6. Just because you hang about long enough it doesn't make you more significant.

7. Alchoholic

8. Didn't she win something in the 50s?

9. Are actors really that significant?

10. It isn't even a squid!

The most significant (albeit non-famous) death in 2010 for me was my Dad, on 1 September. It made me reflect on the fact that every time we (or the Deathlist) score a hit there will be a family somewhere mourning their deceased loved one, just as I was.

Then two days later Cyril Smith died, giving me some much needed points on the DDP, which cheered me up no end.

Not sure if that's good or bad really...

Over the year, it was Nielson, Wisdom and Blake who hurt most.

Folks who had made me laugh, and can't again with new stuff.

I think it will be quite hard for Postlethwaite to be beaten for January 2011. But it is only the 3rd...

The more universal list for 2011 would read something like:

January: Pete Postlethwaite or Gerry Rafferty

February: Jane Russell

March: Elizabeth Taylor

April: Sidney Lumet

May: Osama Bin Laden

June: Peter Falk

July: Amy Winehouse

August: John Howard Davies (really only because no-one else of note died in this month)

September: Cliff Robertson

October: Steve Jobs (narrowly beating Muammar Gaddafi)

November: Joe Frazier (for significance) or Gary Speed (for shock value)

December: Kim Jong-il

Most significant deaths of 2011 IMHO:

1. Bin Laden

2. Jobs

3= Gaddafi

3= Taylor

5. Winehouse

Most significant death of 2011? Dennis Ritchie.

Maybe "most influential person to have died who wasn't as famous as they should have been".

But not most significant.

I dunno, Len Ganley died that month I'd say the most significant death for that month though was Jerry Lieber

Depends on how you measure significant. Nearly everyone in the first world uses software written in C and some kind of Unix variant every day, mostly without realising it.

I'll grant he is not a household name/celeb though outside tech. circles so the death does not have the profile/shock value.

On a different (and somewhat parochial note) note, I'll call Margaret Olley as the most significant Aussie death of the year - after all, she was already an extremely respected painter and artists normally just go up in esteem and influence once they are gone...
