Article discussing how charging Pell would be moving into completely uncharted waters.  Only in communist regimes have cardinals ever been under arrest:  http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-05-31/george-pell-if-police-charge-thearchishop-were-in-new-territory/8565204

It is happening.

Let's see how his conveniently-too-poor-to-fly-home heart holds up under the stress...

LOL - someone on another forum just pointed this out:  His heart was suddenly good enough for him to fly again a month ago:

Clearly, it is a miracle!  :pop:

He'll be busy organising Benedict's conveniently orchestrated funeral that day.

Maybe...

The distraction tactic. :D

Thanks, Benny, for being a martyr to the cause. Love, the Vatican Mafia.

UPDATE:  Pell will be giving a press conference at 4:30 pm our time which will be 7:30 am London/Edinburgh time.

UPDATE 2:

"The scene in Rome

The homeless have snuggled in doorways and cardboard boxes on the pebbled streets surrounding Vatican City but of Cardinal George Pell there is no sign.

Most of the windows in the block of apartments where Cardinal Pell lives with his Cardinal brethren are shuttered despite the warm summer air and no lights are on. Around the corner a military tank and two heavily armed army officers stand guard.

It’s understood Cardinal Pell had been told he is to face charges of historic sex abuse. For more than four weeks he has been waiting the prosecutors’ decision. At the beginning of the month he repeated his innocence of all accusations and told The Australian “I’m hanging in there”."

Hmmm, I don't recall Jesus requesting army protection, like the Vatican evidently has.  In fact, it was the Roman army that put him to death....

The games have begun:

"Australia has no extradition treaty with the Vatican. But in the statement from the Sydney Archdiocese, Pell said he would return to Australia "as soon as possible," following advice and approval by his doctors. Last year, Pell declined to return to Australia to testify for the third time before the Royal Commission, saying he was too ill to fly. He instead testified via video conference from Rome."

To answer the question posed above re: what will the Pope do:
"[T]he Pope had granted him a leave of absence to fight the charges."  Charges he denies of course.

It was a slightly different situation and a different administration, but the Vatican protected (and continues to protect) ex-Cardinal Bernard Law.  My guess is that Frankie won't throw Pell to the wolves unless the pressure gets intense.

Pell claims he will head home for trial -if his doctors permit him to travel... FWIWHe seemed in robust health in the press conference yesterday afternoon.

It is obviously headline news down here. Here are a few mor eof the zillion articles being published on it:

UPDATE:  On the question of Papal support, here is some speculation:

In off the record news that will interest only @Davey Jones' Locker (so the rest of you can ignore this post), was speaking to someone in the know about current Vatican politics yesterday. Apparently the gossip is that there's quite the battle going on between Francis/his friends, and the pro-Benedict Cardinals/etc, mostly picked by Benedict or JPII and basically a whole lot of arseholes. The former lot (Pope and pals) want to "throw Pell to the wolves", possibly for PR but mostly because it'd be politically very good for them. The pro-Benedict lot are completely the opposite. So if Pell goes back to Australia depends on who wins - Pope or his predecessor, essentially.
