Joseph Zen was discharged from hospital and "is not nearing the end of his life" despite rumours.

89-year-old Saint Lucian or Dominican (the island country, not the republic) cardinal Kelvin Felix recently hospitalised with covid but off ventilator. Article is a few days old.

Edit: Recovered, now wheelchairbound but looks fine.

Kelvin Felix in hospital again according to a facebook post from some Dominican parish a week ago and they're asking for prayers. Circling the drain and I doubt he'll see 2024.

Might want to keep an eye on Camillo Ruini, major conservative cardinal. Has been quite frail/in failing health for years (already used a walking stick in 2015) but looked very frail at pope benedict's and cardinal pell's vatican funeral services in January.

I think he can be on my list for 2024. Maybe even do Nascimento.

Alexandre do Nascimento rumored dead late last month. Instead he was "spending a peaceful Sunday with his family"

Edit - 29th of June - Alexandre do Nascimento again dead on facebook. Post is from 26 hours ago, probably another hoax but let's see...

21 new cardinals named, to be inducted in September.

Three of them are over 80:

Agostino Marchetto - Italian titular archbishop of Ecija who worked decades at the Vatican diplomatic service. 83 next month.

Diego Padrón Sánchez - Archbishop emeritus of Cumana, Venezuela. 84.

Father Luis Dri - Some Capuchin friar priest from Argentina who didn't have a Wikipedia page in any language before yesterday. Anyways, he's 96 and it makes him the fourth-oldest cardinal after do Nascimento, Esteban Karlic and Wamala.

Pope Francis is holding that consistory on 30 September, under two weeks from when the number of cardinals under 80 has just dropped to 119 on 17 September.  With 18 added, that swells the number of cardinal electors to 137.  By the end of the year 5 cardinals will have turned 80 (one turns 80 on the 1 October; a Francis created one) and by the end of April 2024, another 5 cardinals will be over 80.  That's still 127.  It will take until the end of 2024 for that number to drop below/to 120, so he's really putting his stamp on the College and the cardinal electors.

Of the cardinals that will be 80 by the end of 2024, 8 were created by Francis, 9 were created by Benedict XVI and 3 were created by John Paul II.  Of course, this doesn't account for any deaths.

Could this be his last consistory?  And is it finally time for him to ascend to the lofty ranks for the DL?

Arguably his consistent hospitalizations and other health issues should have meant he was fairly high on the list for at least this year...

He should be on the list but this is him holding on to replace as many of Benedict's henchmen with his own. He's quite keen on his successor not coming from the right wing pro-Benedict side of Vatican politics.

Personally, all odds are on his successor being firmly right wing unless they manage to choose one of a handful of centrist westerners who are from outside of the usual areas... There is very little chance that the influential Cardinals will want another left winger so soon...

Why do you think he hasn't retired?

It's possible that Francis was elected to counter the extremely bad image of the church during late John Paul II / whole reign of Benedict.

But I can't imagine that the next one will be a conservative. Such ideological whiplash is not credible. They'll probably go for a symbolic moderate - and I don't think he'll be African, but Asian or some other unusual region USA/Australia, etc...

Luis Antonio Tagle at 5/1 still seems the value bet to me.

Hoping Cardinal Ouellet myself. He's the best chance NA has for a Pope - we'll never see an American, as they're almost all linked too closely to the kiddie diddling scandals. Yes he's older, and has the sex lawsuit on hand (but the Vatican tossed the complaint out, and likely Quebec's courts will do so as well), but he's nearly become Pope at least twice, so he may be lucky next time...

Loling at Francis for not being right-wing, at least socially.

83-year old Mexican cardinal Felipe Arizmendi Esquivel has been on life support due to an infection, but of course a miracle has occurred and he's now stable and improving.
