What do you think was the most significant death of the recently passed decade of the 2000's and why?

 

I should have posted this a few months ago around new year's but here it is a bit late.

 

The nominees are:

 

Mohammed Atta (September 11, 2001) 9/11 attack leader

Ronald Reagan (June 5, 2004)

Pope John Paul II (April 2, 2005)

Gerald Ford (December 26, 2006)

Saddam Hussein (December 30, 2006)

Michael Jackson (June 25, 2009)

My vote went to Pope John Paul II. The biggest funeral in human history according to some reports, his illness, death and up until the installation of the new Pope Benedict XVI kept him and the Catholic church in the news constantly for an entire month, his huge impact on late 20th and early 21st Century history are factors that make his selection worthy in my view for the most significant death worldwide for the 2000's decade.

Ok, so maybe I shouldnt have put Gerald Ford on the list and I only included him as one of the two US Presidents that died in the 2000's, presidential history and death being a hobby of mine. I also put Ford ahead of Hussein in a previous thread about the most significant death of 2006 so it only seemed fair. However in terms of the others I dont see how one would be crazy to say any of them would be at the top. Atta and Hussein were both pivital in terms of global geopolitial events in the 2000's. Reagan and John Paul II were amoung the giants of their time in world history from a political and religious standpoint respectively, JPII's death causing a change in leadership after 26 years of the world's largest religious denomination. Michael Jackson was a global pop icon whose sudden death was news around the globe for months. Also the fact that I put "other" as one of the options means that even I admit my list is not the end all be all.

I don't think that former-US Presidents can be the most 'significant deaths' due to the word 'former' before their title.

 

Ford ceased to be President in 1977 then we heard very little from him meaning his death wasn't all that significant when it happened. The same goes for Reagan although to a lesser extent because he is a God of the right-wing conservatives.

 

Thats why I voted for Pope John Paul II. At the time of his death he led 1 billion people - about a 6th of the World's population. His death means (with hindsight) that there is now a more conservative Pope in the Vatican - a change which has had some impact on the world.

I voted other, it's a moot point for sure and I'm not arguing this one death - depicted above - was the most significant human casualty of the decade. Indeed, debate still rages as to exactly who he is. But the argument in favour says this death is symbolic of 3000 odd others, pretty much everyone hereabouts could tell you the exact date of the death and the fallout (heh heh) of his demise sparked political and military ramifications that have - beyond doubt - shaped the decade in the eyes of the world and will do so in the eyes of history.

 

Michael Jackson wasn't as important as that and neither was the most popular pope in living memory.

I don't know if this was just based on Australian searches but I would find it a little surprising if Irwin pipped the Pope on an international survey.

Yes, but everybody expected the Pope to die. There isn't much to read about an old man dying after suffering for years from a degenerative condition.

 

Nobody expected Steve Irwin to die. There was also the added curiosity of how the fuck did a man who wrestles with crocodiles manage to get killed by a stingray.

Michael's Jackson's death was not entirely unexpected, but still sudden. People were interested to know of the circumstances - suicide, murder, accident?

More seriously, I'd agree with MPFC and his argument that those WTC deaths were the most significant of the past decade, for precisely the reasons he's given. Or summat.

I think that Michael Jackson impacted a lot more people than Pope John Paul II.

 

He certainly made an impression on me. Honestly, when Pope John Paul II passed away, while I cannot deny his significance, it did not affect me on a personal level nearly as much.

 

To put it in perspective, Paul Newman's death affected me much more than Pope John Paul II's passing.
