The U.S. go overboard with constantly thanking people for their service regarding what role they may have played in any conflict. My father-in-law was drafted during the Vietnam war, but spent the entirity working in a mailroom in Germany. His brother on the other hand did a runner and went AWOL rather than risk being sent to the front line, especially after seeing some of his friends come back in wooden boxes. The other day I had to drop off my dry-cleaning, the dry cleaners is just a couple of doors down from the local Army / National Guard recruitment office. The guy that worked there was just popping out for his break and as he walked to his car someone walked past him and said "Thank you for your service". This is where my cynical attitude goes into overdrive. Am I supposed to thank someone for ordering paperclips and handing out free t-shirts to people that apply to join? It's a somewhat difficult subject. Those who serve in the military during war, even doing a non-combat job, do a valuable service to their country. After all armies and navies don't run on soldiers, sailors and airmen alone. That said, the same can be said of the men and women who build ships, planes, tanks or paperclips. Until recently the Dutch attitude to veterans was rather low-key: they got a pension if they needed one and were supposed to keep quiet. There are reasons for that: the Dutch didn't do much heroic in WWII, they did in the Indonesian war of Independence, but that was a political defeat and their efforts in UN missions were often politically controversial. Occasionally veterans let themselves be seen and heard, but most chose to remain silent, even to their families and friends. During the last decade some more official recognition of veterans occurs, and immediately discussions started, also among veterans themselves, about desk soldiers and such. Apparently there's no right way of doing it. Anyway, at the occasion of 50 years of liberation in 1995, the city of Rotterdam did a marvelous thing: they invited hundreds of British, Canadian and US veterans, both airmen and soldiers, for a victory parade; air fare, accomodation and expenses paid by the city. It was a wonderful opportunity to give those men a big cheer and have a chat with them. It was a sunny day, so I took a few to the local beer garden for more chats and a good piss-up. "A memorial service will be held Sunday, Aug. 25, for John Victor Beahrs, a longtime Palo Alto resident who saw frontline action in the Pacific during World War II and served on the Palo Alto City Council during the tumultuous 1960s-1970s. Beahrs died July 23 at age 100, leaving behind a large family whose members helped him celebrate his 100th birthday last Oct. 19.... ...During World War II he served in Naval intelligence and amphibious forces of the Pacific Fleet, including serving as beachmaster in the assault landings on Okinawa and Iwo Jima, for which he received a commendation. wow! well done sir.
