That is fucking sad you sad man. You should get around to contacting them.

Richard Brookins, a World War II veteran remembered for having dressed as Saint Nicholas on December 5, 1944 to bring joy to kids in Luxembourg, has died.  He was 96.  Brookins was featured in the 2015 documentary 'The American St. Nick', which saw him travel back to Luxembourg.  His notoriety led him to be inducted into the International Santa Claus Hall of Fame. (Yes, such a thing exists.)

Could go in many threads, but in here she goes.

Anne Olivier Bell at 102.

Was the widow of Quentin Bell, part of the Bloomsbury Group and mother to Virginia Nicholson and Cressida Bell.

Was part of the Monuments Men crowd, who tried to get back the Art stolen by Adolf.

Another of the last living Monuments Men, Harry L. Ettlinger, dead at 92.

Not yet updated for Ettlinger's death, but the Monuments Men Foundation website helpfully notes the remaining survivors:

  • Richard M. Barancik (b. 1924)
  • Nicholas Defino (b. 1924)
  • Motoko Fujishiro Huthwaite (b. 1927)
  • Rouben Sami (b. 1921)

he last survivor of the 1943 Nazi raid on the Rome Ghetto, in which more than 1,000 Jews were taken away to concentration camps, has died aged 91, the Italian Jewish community said Friday.

Lello Di Segni was 16 years old when he was seized with his parents and three younger siblings in the round-up during the first weeks of occupation by the Third Reich’s troops.

If it helps, I'd posted Lello Di Segni in the thread 'The Ones That Got Away' on Friday, prior to it showing up here.

Harry Leslie Smith, a bit of a twitter celeb who I follow, seems to be in his final  hours at 95. He was tweeting until 10 hours ago when he said he had to go to hospital, now his son has taken over his account and says he is in serious condition, not  looking good. . Very sad if he does go. He is proof positive that wisdom comes from age ! https://twitter.com/Harryslaststand

Peter Gouldstone at 98.

On most folks lists for next year I'd have thought after getting a severe doing in a burglary last month.

Obits all over the place.

To be fair,  HW Bush should go here as well.  He was decorated fighter pilot at the end of WWII.  Respect.

Twitter reporting the death of Flt Lt Bob Hughes 23 Squadron

And for the benefit of everyone who can't mind read, Flt Lt W. R. K. Hughes was one of the last surviving airmen of the Battle of Britain.

Brings the number down to just seven.

All guaranteed obits now I would think.

Wg Cmdr John "Tim" Elkington (b. 1920)

Wg Cmdr Paul Farnes (b. 1918)

Sqn Ldr John Stewart Hart (b. 1916)

Flt Lt William Robert Kent Hughes (b. ??)

Flt Lt Maurice Mounsdon (b. c1918)

Looks like I missed Hemingway and McInnes.

Lol.

Or they had the Jews, we had the jurers.

Point being, if this is only one lot of the survivors of the BoB, it seems a bit "Yankish" behaviour to be honest.

Good question. This site is a useful. Seems there were 2937 airmen altogether. 2342 were Brits. 595 were from other nations, so about 20% (if you click on a country it gives you a profile of each airman). Given that the fate of some is still unknown there is a chance that there may be more than 7 surviving Airmen out there but chances are becoming pretty slim now.
