Russian Women[1] Grandmaster Yelena Donaldson-Akhmilovskaya died November 18 from a "long and serious illness", aged 55.

[1] Women can, for historical reasons, hold "women only" titles in the chess world. They're Micky Mouse titles[2] that, now that quite some women hold the titles of International Master and International Grandmaster, are bound to disappear.

[2] Mickey Mouse titles in the sense that e.g. the lowest one, Woman Candidate Master, has a required rating of 2000, a rating I don't have, but that is easily in reach for any reasonably talented amateur who's able and willing to do a few hours of homework every week. Several players in my club have such a rating.

regards,

Hein

Six-time U.S. Champion Walter Browne dead at 66:

http://en.chessbase.com/post/walter-browne-dies-in-his-sleep-at-66

I was stunned to see this is a thread. So I went back and counted. 11 chess related deaths (including non-players) in 9 years.

I remain stunned. 1.2 deaths/year isn't worthy of a thread. But whatever.....

Are you a fucking kitten? I've never seen a human get this much bafflement and excitement from threads.

Was gonna put in suicide thread but this one needs all the help it can get. Plus, with a single posting I've posted a full 8% of all chess deaths.

:-)

Craig Woolcock, 43, who suffered severe 'mood swings' relating to his form, killed himself by suffocation (?!?) after failing to progress in a prestigious chess competition.

What--he put a bag over his head? One's body will naturally fight for air....so did he hang himself? I've never heard of suicide by suffocation.

Very interesting case. Chess can be a treacherous thing to the mind.

I´ve seen him play at the Hoogovens tourney 1986. A rather bland draw with black, IIRC. He eventually won the B-group that year. He's not widely known outside the chess world.

Hulak played his last rated game on 22 May. He won.

German newspaper Die Zeit has an article about Spassky from 10 October 2015, on the occasion of the German premiere of Pawn Sacrifice, with a picture:

78 and doesn't look well.

Report of the death of the great Viktor Korchnoi: https://twitter.com/Chess__News/status/739822709891334144

Obviously early days so awaiting corroboration and news reports before adding him to the round-up.

Edit: There's this, so I'll add him in anyway for now: https://translate.google.co.uk/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fruchess.ru%2Fnews%2Fall%2Fushel%2Biz_zhizni_viktor_korchnoi%2F&edit-text=

The info apparently comes from his son, so...
