The Dead Of 2011

Recommended Posts

Only just getting an obit, but dying September 24th was Cecil Korer, TV producer and programme buyer.

He was the man who brought Countdown, Treasure Hunt and Cheers to Channel 4.

He was also producer/director of the first Top of the Pops and produced seven series of Ask the Family

The Grauniad carries an obit of Sheila Allen, who died on October 13th.

Principally a stage actor, she had a few memorable roles on TV and in films. She played Number 14 in The Prisoner episode A, B and C, and Cassie in A Bouquet of Barbed Wire (original version) and its sequel Another Bouquet.

In film, she last played a witch in Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire.

Sadly there doesn't seem to be an horologists thread, so the clocking off of watchmaker George Daniels will have to go here. As you probably know, he invented the co-axial escapement, which, by utilizing radial friction instead of sliding friction at the impulse surfaces, significantly reduces friction, theoretically resulting in longer service intervals and greater accuracy over time. Obviously.

Anything that affords me greater accuracy is most welcome.

TV producer/documentary maker Nigel Farrell died September 24, of pancreatic cancer.

His output included The Village and An Island Parish; it was during the making of the latter that he was diagnosed with cancer, and wrote about it.

He seems to have slipped beneath everyone's radar.

Probably best remembered by viewers for A Place In France, doing up a house in France with his mate Nippi, and then later an ill-starred attempt at opening a curry house. Seemed a nice bloke but, gosh, someone should have knocked some sense into him in the various series of A Place In France.

Just saw that. They say death comes in threes, so he follows on from Steve Jobs and Dennis Ritchie as the third pioneering IT figure in a month.

Oh, for goodness sake, what a brutal year for British TV - I remember him well. A whole swathe of actors from the 1980's and 1990's have gone this year.

Leonard Stone who played Violet's dad in Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory has died aged 87. Typically he's someone I was considering for next year.

One of the last surviving actors from that iconic movie

Not to mention Gene Wilder himself.

Leonard Stone was the last of the adults who went with the children into the factory though.

Bad news for the legions of third-wave ska fans that inhabit this board, as the founder of the Vans shoe company, James Van Doren, has died at 72.
