Curse Of The Eurovision

Recommended Posts

First, pro-Russian rebel leader in the Ukraine Alexey Mozgovoy dies:

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/may/24/ukraine-separatist-commander-leader-killed-in-car-bomb

And then Russia loses to Sweden, really a bad day for them....

I didn't quite get the popularity of the russian song. It was a solid ballad, nothing more? But my turkish neighbour thought it's either them or Italy. So I might be missing that particular musical sense. Though I was really pleased with the sixth place for Latvia, really impressive for such an experimental song, but then Belgium also made 4th place. The general level of the competition was relatively high, I thought.

Congratulations to Sweden. A worthy winner. If you hear it for the first time, and watch the presentation!, you are overwhelmed by it. A perfect song for the competition. The German result... eh, I didn't like the song anyway. Germany's musical taste is poor.

I haven't watched the Eurovision since I was a teenager. (Bloc voting killed off any interest I had in it) To me, it's more of a cringe fest than anything else, as far as I know, Abba and Celine Dion were the only acts who won that went on to have decent international careers in the music business. I have noticed that a lot of people on the Continent tend to take it somewhat seriously. A German friend of mine who holds a Eurovision party each year - a bigger affair than his New Year's do, or so he says - got quite annoyed with me when I dared to take the piss out of it.

Hey, don't forget to vote for a certain blue-and-yellow country tomorrow. Hint: Ukraine isn't participating this year... ;)

My money's on as follows:

Italy to win.

Sweden and Russia will fill other two top three spots.

Estonia and Cyprus to finish top 10, as will Belgium.

UK will finish 20th.

As I was out of the country I watched the song previews on youtube. I liked Macedonia's entry (Autumn Leaves). It didn't make it past the semi-final stage.

His biggest hit was L'Eau vive: https://youtu.be/NkV8JQKSvdA

Just checking in in case anyone out there knows different. So far as I, and Wikipedia, can see the improbably long-lived duo of Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnson are still both breathing. UK Eurovision entry in 1959 (where their inane piece of shit song was duly whupped; only staging a late comeback when Monty Python revived it for the purposes of ironic appreciation). Anyone out there know different regarding this highly obitable pair?

I think Pearl Carr has just had a birthday. Here's a Guardian article that mentions a show broadcast containing a tribute marking Teddy Johnson's 95th birthday last year. Safe to say I think they are both still alive if we haven't heard differently. http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2014/sep/13/david-hepworth-radio-review

That IS incredible. I know not of these two but yes thanks to Python fully aware of the skit referencing the song.

Well someone should put them on a list next year.

I'm pretty sure my love of All Things British is much of that.

Ironic appreciation indeed.

I think there are enough Eurovision nerds out there to ensure twitter and Wiki are up to date with people like this.

I hope my research is not being called into question.

Don't want to give too much away but I've been in receipt of Deathrace teams already and part of the point of the question I posted above was to check their - ahem - eligability.

Married 1955, so - frankly - respect for staying married and staying breathing. Dead pool wise, you might usefully assume toppling in close order from such a couple.

Goodness, if it isn't exciting enough, they've only gone and changed the voting rules to make it more exciting! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-35602473finally I am tired of countries voting for their neighbours.

Maybe if Graham Norton stopped sucking the life out of it commentary-wise, it might be the peak of annual television!

Have they thought of getting those Hurts lads to do it? They're very popular in Euroland.

Doesn't matter who we send as the Ukraine will win it.

They have a Crimean based Halibut folk singer who is from the Tatar community once exiled by Stalin etc etc..

I expect her to be black, a hermaphrodite and wheelchair bound coz she was born without any legs.....or arms and she is also blind with a lisp.

We really need to learn to play the tea and sympathy card.
