Curse Of The Eurovision

Recommended Posts

Fucking hell, I know that it gets a bit tedious in here but let's not let it get all Twittery for taking offence with the odd outdated term/insult/term of endearment.

Remember, this is DL and If I think Toastie has a fanny that looks like a badly packed kebab, I'm sure she will not take offence and just tell me to piss off, or summat.

Ya, know?

Paul Koulak, French composer of France's 1973 entry Sans Toi has reportedly died: https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=fr&u=https://www.leprogres.fr/culture-loisirs/2021/06/30/les-obseques-de-paul-koulak-compositeur-de-la-musique-de-fort-boyard-auront-lieu-a-saint-chamond&prev=search&pto=aue

He also did all the music including the credits music for Fort Boyard.

Anyway, here's Martine Clemenceau:

Apparently former Uriah Heep singer John Lawton was part of the 1976 Eurovision entry for Germany, the Les Humphries Singers. Lawton reportedly died at the end of last month: https://blabbermouth.net/news/former-uriah-heep-singer-john-lawton-dead-at-74/

I'll go out on a limb here and suggest he's far right in this clip from the Contest - not Germany's finest hour, but I think they were jumping on the previous winner from Netherlands:

Edit: Comments in YT suggest the guy in blue in the clip is John Lawton. Well, I had a 25 per cent chance of guessing right.

Obituary for Colin Tully who has died aged 66 from cancer: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2021/jul/14/colin-tully-obituary

Provided the backing (saxaphone) for Logan on What's Another Year, fast becoming a cursed song.

Tully also did the music for two notable films, That Sinking Feeling and Gregory's Girl.

Curt-Eric Holmquist dead at 73 from leukemia, conductor of the 1984 winning entry Diggi-loo Diggi-ley.

Composer Torgny Söderberg (b. 1944) and the singers, the three Herrey brothers are still alive.

Gives me an opportunity to watch it again. Which I do at least once a month.

I have sung it at Karaoke in the Swedish. I shall also do that.

German-Italian singer Nino De Angelo, Germany's 1989 ESC entry, says he has COPD and maybe 5 years left to live:

He's a precarious existence. Bankruptcies, lymphoma in the 90s, confessed cocaine user and obsessive gambler.

Nino De Angelo was supposed to perform last weekend - got replaced:

Apart from the COPD, two cancer fights, bad lifestyle, he also had two heart bypass surgeries in recent years.

Claude Lombard, who represented Belgium in 1968 with the song "Quand tu reviendras", has died at age 76.

The song finished joined 7th place out of 17 entries.

She returned to Eurovision in 1973, albeit as a backing singer, for that year's Belgian entry "Baby Baby" performed by Nicole & Hugo. Although this finished in last place in the voting, the song, and particularly the performance, has since assumed iconic status in the Eurovision fan community.

Finished 8th in the Grand Final with Anytime You Need. You know how plastic bags and bits of loo roll find their way onto trees? It's that one. Terry Wogan made a rather unfortunate reference to a Red Indian in commentary.

Franck Olivier, Belgian born singer part of the multi-lingual group The Internationals, including some British interest, that represented Luxembourg at the 1985 contest, reportedly dead aged 72, certain other sources quote liver cancer: https://www-telesambre-be.translate.goog/le-chanteur-franck-olivier-est-decede?_x_tr_sl=fr&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=nui,sc

IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1491415/

Finishing 13th with Children, Kinder, Enfants, which at the time I thought rather jolly:

He does some rather "almost" rapping, which is endearing or annoying, depending on your taste.

Although it's becoming more and more of a long shot to win in 2021, I'm not yet done. I had Franck Olivier, the Belgian singer who now becomes part of the 'Curse of the Eurovision' (which is also where an obit link can be found). He was a solo, worth 13 points (8+5).

Edmundo Silva, part of the group Os Amigos who represented Portugal in the 1977 Contest with Portugal no Coracao, finishing 14th, being reported dead aged 81 or 82 depending where you read: .https://e--festivalpt-pt.translate.goog/faleceu-edmundo-silva-os-amigos-esc-1977/?_x_tr_sl=pt&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=nui,sc

Sort of a Eurovision supergroup with many participants of other Eurovisions. The contest was of course held in London, hosted by Angela Rippon and Portugal's song immediately preceded the UK entry Rock Bottom, which as we all know was the time when the UK didn't finish rock bottom.

Anyhow, you'll be wanting the tune:

In the last round of the Scavenger Hunt, I picked no less than 3 half-decent shouts from Portuguese entries. He was not one of them.

Alive pre-2000 eurovision contestants for Finland are (no bands included):

1962 - Marion Rung (b. 1945). 1963 - Laila Halme (b. 1934). 1965 - Viktor Klimenko (b. 1942). 1966 - Ann-Christine (b. 1944). 1968 - Kristiina Hautala (b. 1948). 1969 - Jaakko Antikainen (b. 1950) and Laura Ruotsalo (b. 1949). 1971 - Markku Aro (b. 1950), Anja Koivisto (b. 1946) and Anneli Koivisto (b. 1943). 1972 - Kim Floor (b. 1948). 1973 - Marion Rung, again. 1974 - Carita Holmström (b. 1954). 1977 - Monica Aspelund (b. 1946). 1979 - Katri Helena (b. 1945). 1980 - Vesa-Matti Loiri (b. 1945). 1982 - Kojo (b. 1953). 1983 - Ami Aspelund (b. 1953). 1985 - Sonja Lumme (b. 1961). 1986 - Kari Kuivalainen (b. 1960). 1987 - Vicky Rosti (b. 1958). 1989 - Anneli Saaristo (b. 1949). 1991 - Kaija Kärkinen (b. 1962). 1996 - Jasmine (b. 1976).

Laila Halme isn't in public much nowadays. Ann-Christine lives in Sweden nowadays, not in public much and looks bad. Same for Kristiina Hautala, who however is in good condition apparently. Same for Jaakko and Laura. Katri Helena and Vesa-Matti Loiri have had health problems (Loiri has had a ton of them, Helena is a smoker and has kidney problems) Kojo has had alcohol problems. Vicky Rosti has a history of bad habits, Anneli Saaristo has diabetes and has had a sleeping pill addiction.
