Nestor Mata, best known as (and the only reason why I've heard of him before) the only survivor of a plane crash which killed the incumbent Filipino President.

EDIT: Since realized that he's still alive, the thing I linked to was a hoax

Helen Fawkes was talking over the weekend about the highs and lows of her situation. Another variation on Warren Zevon's classic; "enjoy every sandwich" philosophy but she clearly doesn't expect to see 2014. If she does, she's nailed on for the likes of us! Old link in case anyone needs to catch up.

USA Today founder Al Neuharth dead at 89.

When I checked to see if he was in the DDP (he wasn't for this year) I thought he looked familiar. Turned out his picture was of Stephen Sondheim!

Changed it now even though it doesn't matter anymore...

Perhaps I'm just imagining it but I swear Whicker had his own thread here somewhere that had an obscure name or something. I thought I saw it bumped just a couple of weeks ago. Maybe it was just some other thing where he happened to get discussed. Blah. There are so many threads on here it's like trying to blindly remember all the different flavours of ice cream there are.

Sad death, I love old school BBC and ITV people.
