I'm 99% sure somewhere on the forum we worked out the shortest distance between being awarded a major honour and dying, and it might have been the same day? I want to say it was a knighthood for a businessman but I may be miles off.

In 2018 when Ken Dodd died we all discussed it. Names mentioned included Alan Bates, Dudley Moore, David Mackay, Jeffrey Tate, Naim Dangoor, Robert Stephens and the aforementioned Tam Galbraith as people who died in under six months (well under in some cases) of being announced.

But @time brought up Sir Henry Cotton, 3 time Open winning Golfer, who died nine days BEFORE his knighthood was publicly announced, having agreed to it and died before it could be made public!

Someone must have died on the way to the ceremony, or even during it, statistically speaking

Deborah James has been given her damehood in person following a home visit by Prince William. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-61446342

Oh  I 'm not knocking the damehood for charity, but how come he suddenly had a gap to personally hand it over.

Deborah wrote a book. Looks very skinny and book probably will get released after she has died.

Longtime Detroit Free Press columnist Glenna "Nickie" McWhirter, 92, died on May 16, at Sunrise Assisted Living in Troy, MI.

McWhirter was sort of a "Swiss Army knife" to the Free Press, as she worked at the city desk, in the lifestyle section, covered advertisements in the business department, and more.

Martin Bell was on GBNews last night. Looked and sounded okay. Still carrying a little bit of weight, which is quite healthy for someone in their 80s, and generally doesn't indicate they're nearing the end.

Anyways, he reflected a little on his own mortality. He's currently writing a book defending the continued existence of the British monarchy (his main argument being that a democracy is stronger with a non-political figurehead at the helm). He stated the reason he's doing it was that he fears the relatively niche republican movement in the UK will get a boost after QEII dies, and he wants to contribute to the debate, although he acknowledged that it will likely happen "after his time". Read into that what you will. I still think he could go on for another 5 years or so.

Bell is on the current Unicef adverts, does he have Parkinson's? He has the same "grip the armchair and stare straight at the camera" look that Jeremy Paxman and Dave Clarke have had in recent TV appearances.

Latest update on Deborah James.Lucid but getting physically weaker agitated incontinent and self reports being " exhausted sick and in pain and I can`t move" . She says she is determined not to die over the jubilee weekend as doesn`t want Meghan making the front page when she goes.

Most telling line is the  disclosure of the prognosis she was given when put under palliative care nearly a month ago and  at the time said she didn`t know how long she had left. In reality she was told

“I was given days, to a week, to live when I left the hospital. But I’m still here."

Sounds cruel but I think her passing would be a happy release at this stage.

Deborah James, who seemingly has danced and jigged her way on various platforms and on holidays while drawing a salary from the BBC for years is now living life to the full by quaffing champers and having a flutter on the horses at Royal Ascot.

I won't be contributing when others put their hands in their pockets when the inevitable gofundme for her surviving family is launched. I don't deny her profligacy at this time, but if you piss away your kids' inheritance, the public shouldn't support your fun.

Maybe grumpy, best get my dinner.

Guardian obituaries on the axe list perhaps?

No new obituaries in the last 3 days despite it being the working week, and for weeks before that they seem to have been churning them out at a pace of about 2 over 3 days. Cutbacks or a sign of things to come?

Former Look North presenter Harry Gration has died.

He was co-presenter on  South Today for a while a few years ago, with regular presenter Sally Taylor. You can guess what they went with!

I also remember him doing football reports on Grandstand (usually Leeds iirc).

Fuck

Knew him from Final Score on Grandstand. Mostly doing match reports but presented the odd time generally if there was a full round of fixtures on Bank Holidays when Final Score was a stand alone programme

Maybe the team is so small that one person going on holiday or being unwell means few if any are published.

Nope. Guardian obits is the opposite. Literally dozens of them do obituaries. Each of their obit writers specialises in a certain field and writes elsewhere for the publication (i.e. they don't just write obituaries all day).
