Was it public knowledge he was ill? Did he mention it on his podcast?

No, but episodes of the podcast were becoming more irregular recently and he was recording most of them (all of them?) remotely rather than in-studio. He went silent on social media for a few months as well...

Apparently he died of heart disease.  Maybe no one was funnier at a roast than Gilbert Gottfried.  I realize he obviously did a lot more than just that in his career, but this man's roast sets were insane.  He would have his fellow comics howling.  May he RIP.

Comedy Legend Gilbert Gottfried Dead At 67 (tmz.com)

"Gilbert's rep, Glenn Schwartz, tells us he died from a heart abnormality called Ventricular Tachycardia due to Myotonic Dystrophy type II."

He posted this only 7 months ago and Jeff Ross is now the only one still alive from that picture. RIP. I liked his work.

I lay myself bare, here.

I don't actually know who the fuck he is.

Maybe I am getting old, don't read enough, watch enough TV, all of them, probably.

He voiced Iago in Disney's Aladdin, if you've seen that.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm not going to say anything ignorant or crass as 'Who?' but reading all these replies from such a wide variety of posters, I am surprised I'm in the minority. I expected a few posts and that was it.

Might as well check out what GG was all about....

Sad times. The American comedic world has seen some shocking losses in a very short amount of time. Unlike anything I can recall.

Gilbert Gottfried (4/12/22) at age 67. Heart disease

Louie Anderson (1/21/22) at age 68. Cancer

Bob Saget (1/9/22) at age 65. Head trauma

Norm Macdonald (9/14/22) at age 61. Cancer

In less than 6 months all these hilarious people have passed. Sad thing is they were all friends, Saget/Gottfried/Macdonald especially. These are all people I knew and followed, as I'm sure many others did as well.

RIP

What a horrendous year it has been for comedy.  Implore everyone to set a couple hours aside and check out Gilbert's appearance on Norm Macdonald's podcast.  It gets bizarre and goes completely off the rails but that was when both were at their best.  The audio-only is available on youtube but it losing something without picture, which can be seen here:

It is unbelievably sad, to me, that we'll never see something the likes of this again.

From The Dead of 2021 thread following the death of Dean Stockwell:

Double crossed baddie in Beverly Hills Cop 2.

Lotta talk about trilogies on this Forum (Star Wars, Back To The Future) but not this franchise. Yes, I know a fourth is in the works.

Look back at the cast lists from the Cop movies, lots of potential fodder coming in the next some years - they are almost star laden.

Gottfried was the baddie's accountant as I recall in Beverly Hills Cop 2.

Should have listened to my slightly younger self when picking a Silver Screen DP movie.

I didn’t know who Louie, Norm or Gilbert were. I didn’t know who Chadwick Boseman was. In 2008, I didn’t even know who Heath Ledger was. We all have blind spots in our cultural make-up.

What's eating Gilbert Gottfried? Worms.

You know, I'm old enough to remember back to simpler, more innocent times, when the worst thing you'd hear about on the news was hijacked jet liners flying into buildings.

Same.  Or any of the others mentioned.  But I tend not to watch American stuff.

Sometimes I thought Gottfried was brilliant, others the worst most annoying comic ever.  Regardless, I wish he was still here.
