Mike Hendrick's farewell meal apparently which took place ten days ago. Botham, Boycott, John Emburey and Bob Taylor of the '81 team pictured.

Derek Randall looks in good nick.

In case people are wondering the line up from left to right is John Lever, Ian Botham, Mike Hendrick (RIP), Bob Taylor, Geoff Miller, Derek Randall, John Emburey, Geoff Boycott

I fear the England cricket team of '81 are going to have an even worse outcome than the Boys of '66 in their match with the Grim Reaper. As I have remarked previously, very few are candidates for old bones.

England team were older though so still plenty of time for an Australian middle order collapse.

England v Australia Game of Life One Innings for the Ashes, Neutral Venue Centurion (if they're lucky) Park, South Africa

Selection Panel met and picked the 11 cricketers for each side of the 1981 series who played in the most games. In Australia's case this left a tied selection decision between Martin Kent, Geoff Lawson and Trevor Chappell with Kent being the unlucky one to miss out by virtue of being least well known (IMO). Number of appearances in the series shown in brackets after name.

Score is as at today's date.

Definitely worth updating this over the next 20-30 years and it will be interesting to see how it progresses. In Test match terms, a celestial Richie Benaud is currently presenting the highlights package from Day One so this particular match has a long way to go.

Former Sussex & England player Ian Thomson, out for 92 (local news source). He was, following the death of Donald Smith earlier this year, England's oldest living (male) test player. He played in 5 tests in the 1964-65 MCC tour to South Africa.

He once took all ten wickets in an innings v Warwickshire.

Also the last England player born in the 1920s.

The oldest is now Jim Parks (wiki, born 21 Oct 1931).

Smith, Thomson, Parks, all Sussex players. Must be something in the water!

Nine of the England 1981 Ashes team pictured last week. From left to right (not politically!), Botham, Boycott, Old, Willey, Taylor, Gooch, Emburey (I think), Gatting, Gower.

Sir Geoffrey Boycott was on Talking Pints on GBNews tonight. Looked pretty good, still very sharp mentally. Has never drank or smoked yet ofc had a lucky escape from throat cancer nearly 20 years ago.

When asked about his longevity, he said “I’ve made 80. I don’t think I’ll see 100.” Likely accurate but I can see him reaching 90.

Yeah, he sipped on a soft drink whilst Farage had a pint.

Also, a Google reveals the interviews Boycott did about his throat cancer, and they tend to confirm he’s never drank or smoked.

Maybe it's just me, but anyone appearing on this sort of thing as a lifetime teetotaller just appears to be an overly self opinionated toss-pot.

'No I don't drink but, still, I'll come on your just a pint prog,  I mean it's me eh?'

Mind you, Farage? Meh.

In an autobiography many years ago, Boycott wrote that he was very rarely out in the 'Nervous Nineties' so either 80-89 or 100+?

With Afghanistan in chaos, is it wise to start thinking about the fates of Afghanistan cricketers Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi?

Ted Dexter out at 86.

That uncharacteristic England performance yesterday maybe to much too take in.

He'd have been on my new theme team too; its not a big pool of candidates either, so I hope no-one else dies before the end of the year.

Or maybe his horrendous stint as a selector finally got to his soul.
