Eileen Ash is now in the equivalent of the 'nervous nineties' as a batter approaches his/her century. She is only 2 days away from becoming a supercentenarian (110) & as reported before was exactly a week short of her 4th birthday when W G Grace died in 1915. In his time Grace was reportedly the 3rd most famous person in the British Empire after Queen Victoria & Gladstone.

Australian Cricket player Ashley Mallet died at 78 years:

He made 38 tests for Australia, and was considered one of his era's greatest off spin bowlers.

I remember him from when I was just starting to take a real interest in cricket, from either the 74-75 or 1975 Ashes. More likely the home series. Still around the next time the Ashes were contested (five years later) though didn't figure as much.

Interesting as very few Australian Test cricketers from that era are in the celestial pavilion compared to English sides from that time.

Eileen Ash is 110 today. The first sporting supercentenarian? Certainly the last cricketer to have overlapped the life of W G Grace who died in 1915.:birthday:

Perhaps just as famous as his playing exploits was his role as the coach of the Australian team in the 1981 "Botham's Ashes" series

Does anyone know where Eileen is in terms of Britain's oldest women? Must be in the top five, surely.

Hopefully, he isn't going to take it lying down.
