Dutch musician Toby Rix who was a feature on Dutch TV on the 70's and 80's with his self invented horn instrument died at age 97. Seeing him play is like seeing a live Spike Jones.

A couple of actresses from German speaking countries, who were very popular during the 1950ies & 1960ies are still alive:

Sonja Ziemann 1926, German

Liselotte Pulver 1929, Swiss (She filmed with Billy Wilder & Douglas Sirk).

Nadja Tiller 1929, Austrian ( Miss Austria 1949).

Ingrid van Bergen 1931 German ( She became notorious after she shot her lover).

Marianne Koch 1931, German

Johanna Matz 1932, Austrian

A couple of male actors who are younger, but anything can happen:

Bruno Ganz 1941, Swiss (current holder of the Iffland-Ring, that makes him officially the most significant actor of the German-speaking theatre. He once admitted that he had alcohol problems).

Klaus-Maria Brandauer Austrian, 1943 (nominated for an Oscar for "Out of Africa").

Helmut Berger 1944, Austrian. (Star of Visconti films. He has alcohol problems & seems very decrepit).

Hardy Krüger 1928, German, is also still alive (He seems to be in good health).

Two French names:

Micheline Presle, 1922, one of the legends of  French cinema.

Michel Piccoli, 1925 (Seems to be in good health).

Was going to place in 'Fringes' but she appears to be an accomplished vocalist in her own right, so....

Carnatic vocalist Radha Vishwanathan, 83, daughter of M.S. Subbulakshmi, who accompanied the legendary musician for nearly five decades on stage, died in Bengaluru on Tuesday night. “My mother Radha Vishwanathan breathed her last on Tuesday, 11.50 p.m. on January 2. She was suffering from pneumonia for the last few weeks but was mentally very active."

Here is a list of surviving People's Artists of the USSR. Remarkably, they all they all tend to receive an obituary in their home country (and usually one in Russia too). Many of these, particularly the Russians, are still popular and prominent even today. After the fall of the Soviet Union they remained well connected and some went into politics themselves. You'll often see them at photoshoots with Vladimir Putin or waving Russian flags at events in support of the annexation of Crimea.

Medeniyet Shahberdiyeva, Turkmen Opera Singer, is the first of this list to die

Only 70? For some reason I thought she was in her 80s, which stopped me considering too long for the DDP iirc.

after Johnny, a big loss for french music.

I agree with you. But she has died today, 3 years after Charlie Hebdo attacks. Don't expect any Johnny Hallyday-esque funeral.

too bad.

Putting this in here as it's probably more relevant than in the Eurovision thread.

Has Veronique Sanson stuck her oar in yet 're France Gall's death?

even without charlie hebdo attack she wouldn't have same funeral than Johnny.

Johhny was a unique figure in France, and was by far more popular and famous than France Gall (lot of young people don't know her). I see no people in France have same funeral than him ( even Depardieu, Bardot and Zidane)

And to answer my own question - no she hasn't. Indeed, the usual rags are commenting that a response from Sanson is very much noticeable by its absence.

I do hope Vero is just keeping a respectful distance and silence rather than being a bitch.
