I don't think so I think she's more of a hero now. She is always championed herself as a hero to the Burmese people and she defended them from a tyrannical junta and now illegal immigrant Muslim terrorists,Squatters and invaders. She just don't want trucks of Islamic peace enriching the Burmese people. Wasn't it the Muslims who attacked the Burmese soldiers first again? How exactly do you think the Burmese army and the people should react? Maybe take a page out of the UK's book and carry on as normal pretending there isn't a lebenoneseque civil war coming? Name me a terror attack in Poland or the Czech Republic ? Both countries with no Islamic immigration and zero terror attacks . In fact the more Muslims in your society the more terror attacks funny that.

Fact is if we didn't have Muslim immigration in the UK and Europe in general then I can 100% guarantee alot of people who are now dead from said attacks would be alive and a lot of young girls lives ruined by being raped by muslim gangs as a child maybe living the lives they deserved to live. Sadly they were let down by their parents , police , labour party and the government in general. Mosques and kebabs aren't culturally enriching enough for me that I would sacrifice lives for. If people love Muslims and want to defend them so much there is the whole middle east to live in . What benefits to the UK and humanity in general is there to turning Bradford , London and many other places majority Muslim? Surely they would just create another Bangladesh or Pakistan . Infact these Muslim majority areas areas are already starting to look like 3rd world places. I'm sure you will blame the Tories or 'the elites' for underfunding but actually if more people are using the system and not paying tax you have a funding gap and a strain on the system. Isn't it funny before 1997 we never talked about struggling to fund the NHS.

Looks pretty much like a coup to me .Well thats the end of the illusion of  democracy in Myanmar then. There had been rumours of a coup for days.Looks like the military were inspired by Donald Trump ! Does Aung San Suu Kyi go back to being an internationally respected freedom fighter now despite her abandonment of the Rohingyas? She can always say the military wouldn't let her give them their freedom now ! She was probably just their puppet. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/myanmar-aung-san-suu-kyi-arrest-b1795569.html

The coup is apparently lead by Commander of Armed Forces Min Aung Hlaing and first vice president Myint Swe. A "state of emergency" has been declared for the period of one year. They've promised an election but apparently Min Aung Hlaing wants to try what it's like to be a dictator before that.

I doubt she will just bounce back after the Rohingya crisis.

If I had to guess, she had "no other choice" but to suppress the Rohingyas. Many people, and the military want it too much. Sometimes, you have to strike deals with the previous elite. More than sometimes, quite regularly, actually.

I guess the regime have been watching the situation and were just waiting to strike again.

I'm looking on Twitter and citizens of Myanmar are saying their internet/phone services are going to be cut within the next few hours. So no access to outside communication. Basically turn into North Korea.

No one has stepped foot on, much less been born in, MyanBurma who is worthy of an indvidual thread based on fame.  There are no famous Burmese.  Not one in 1000 'men on the street' would know who this was if asked. (insert Python skit).  I think that's a reasonable litmus, that 1 in 100 humans in any culture would have fuckall clue who a person is, and if their name sounds like you dropped a coin into a metal bowl....they won't meet this meager standard.  In the words of Ronald Reagan: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this thread!"  I guess the Admins were as shitty on 9 May 2009 as they are in 2021 (two of them are probably the same twats).

Says the one who thought Bill Russell was a world-renowned figure.  Let's leave politics to the grown-ups, shall we?

I still use Burma and Rangoon too. Mind you, I still say Calcutta and apparently Bangalore was renamed 'Bengaluru' in 2007! No, me neither.

My main problem with 'Myanmar' is that I'm not sure how to pronounce it - I've heard both Mee-anmar and My-anmar on the BBC, which is normally a good arbiter on such things.

Granted Aung San Suu Kyi is by far the most famous person from Burma, but Richard Beckinsale was famously half-Burmese (and so Kate and Samantha are also part-Burmese). Also the radio reviewer/writer Sue Arnold is half-Burmese - I wish I'd known she was more-or-less blind when I worked with her as it used to drive mad trying to type what she was dictating, I thought she was just making it up on the hoof. Oops.

Nothing wrong with that. Technically not incorrect geographically.

My old man refers to the whole of the Netherlands as “Holland”. That’s one that bugs me.

Oh, and as a Scot, visiting the States and hearing folk referring to the whole of the U.K. as “England”.

I really struggle with "Naypyidaw".  It would be much easier if the capital was Yangon and they went back to calling it Rangoon.

As for my Dad's war medal, I won't be calling that the Myanmar Star.
