Predictor 1,018 Posted December 13, 2013 Hey, is it true that Gough Whitlam was in an Australian movie in 1937? Does anyone have the footage? According to his wiki page, the movie was called "The Broken Melody" Well, I'll be damned! I had never heard that piece of trivia before. IMDB lists it as The Vagabond Violinist The Broken Melody (original title). He played 'Man in Nightclub'. I found this picture on a Facebook page. Appearently, he is the guy furthest from the camera in this scene.
Guest Guest Posted December 13, 2013 I wonder how many of the other people in that pic are still alive. Not many,if any I'll bet!
Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted March 16, 2014 I must admit this is someone who I am only aware of from discussions on this forum. Was he well liked down under? He was the only PM to ever be sacked... He was before my time but he was a polarising figure. The majority opinion seems to be he had a lot of extremely good ideas that he tried to implement too quickly and his inept ministers bungled most of them. On the other hand, there is a persistent rumour, reinstated most recently by the likes of John Pilger and Jean Bricmont, that the CIA played a part in the sacking of the Whitlam government as he was too anti-US for their liking... Then again, maybe not: http://www.theage.co...0409-2hjjt.html Then again, maybe so: http://johnpilger.com/articles/the-forgotten-coup-and-how-the-godfather-rules-from-canberra-to-kiev

Davey Jones' Locker 1,324 Posted March 17, 2014 Just found this academic paper on the issue. It talks specifically about the dismissal and about the line between investigative journalism and conspiracy theories in general. Very interesting conclusions indeed: http://www98.griffith.edu.au/dspace/bitstream/10072/2432/1/32006_1.pdf
Body Snatcher 44 107 Posted March 18, 2014 Just found this academic paper on the issue. It talks specifically about the dismissal and about the line between investigative journalism and conspiracy theories in general. Very interesting conclusions indeed: http://www98.griffit...2/1/32006_1.pdf That was truly a fascinating read, I read whilst I was eating and almost spilled my tacos all over the keyboard, I was that captivated..Although I'd have to say that one hopes that investigative journos approach their material objectively, they investigate evidence and report sound conclusions; which, to any reasonable person (should that person exist), would arrive at the same conclusion if, or when, confronted with the same evidence. Conspiracy theorists, on the other hand, approach evidence by attempting to shape it to suite a particular agenda, this ranges from the crack-pot to the misinformed/uninformed, a la FOX NEWS. Conspiracy theorists hold on to this and often dismiss genuine evidence to the contrary as additional conspiracy. In terms of the Nixon and Ford administrations meddling in the politics of other nations, one only needs to look at examples in South America, South East Asia and the Middle East for evidence that this was going on all over the world at this time. but it was a fascinating read.

Guest Guest Posted March 27, 2014 May I be the first to congratulate Mr Pincher on the occasion of his 100th birthday tomorrow. It wil be interesting to see if he's able to take part in any festivities to mark this momentous occasion. His absence may indicate that he won't be around for his 101st birthday !
