Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know he doesn't have a lot of "enemies" in the Vatican anymore. Seems like a lot of them have died during the last few years. There's the US assholes Raymond Burke and Timothy Broglio, Walter Brandmüller who is 94, maybe Gerhard Müller and Francis Arinze. Juan Sandoval Íñiguez is another hardliner but seems to be quite ill. Who else?

I'm always impressed by the number of obscure names that you know off ! How is that ?

Also, who's that man on your profil pic ?

Brandmüller's one of the oldest cardinals and is my 20/20 replacement if my current guy dies, Arinze's a former potential pope and Broglio (and the much, much more known Burke) I've known for a while from news and controversies. The guy in my profile picture is a young Satya Mohan Joshi.

Probably nothing, but...

It’s just that today marks the 10th anniversary of his election as pope

I doubt we'll see another 5-10 years though.

BBC have just announced he's been hospitalised for some pre-arranged checks.

BBC isn't what it was. Fuck me, I must be getting old myself.

They could have spent the time posting that writing an obituary for Keith Reid

There's probably no-one there old enough to remember him. (Though no doubt they're all experts in Love Island, BGT, I'm a Celeb etc)

BBC Breaking News Notification saying he's being kept in hospital for a few days due to a respitory infection.

Given he's missing part of his right lung and his age you do wonder. Wouldn't necessarily take much in those circumstances...

french medias reporting both "cardiac problem" and "shortness of breath". Not so pre-arranged as mentioned before ?

If it was pre-arranged for testing or treatment, I doubt it'd have made the news...

Been away most of the day.

Sounds like he had breathing issues, they arranged for him to come in and discovered it wasn't too good.

Either that or the Vatican's initial statement was polishing a turd.

In any event, he's the Pope. Jeez, I'm not RC but every whisper of Prince Philip or Her Maj going into hospital had the doom merchants out on here predicting their demise, speculating what was wrong etc etc. Whatever you think of the whole bally incense and mass, he really is that important to many.

If he dies, it might have more coverage than the one event that happened on September 8th, 2022.

I doubt it in terms of significance. He's only been Pope for 10 years, nowhere near the length of JPII, and he isn't as universally loved as the Queen was. Yes the media will cover it, but it will not be all encompassing like it was with the Queen, at least until we get to the conclave. That will be around the clock coverage...

He looked pretty sickly at the funeral, and was spry just a few years ago. Doesn't seem he'll make 90.

the news are reassuring, the doctors are optimistic apparently and he is said to be able to host easter celebration on sunday but I must say he doesn't look good in those pictures from yesterday… Did he gain a lot of weight or is it just me ?

Well I wouldn't say so, unless you are an 86 year old Argentinian living in Vatican City and you love wearing white robes? ;)

Will be discharged on Saturday.

Question is it because he's able to be discharged, or was it marginal and the fact that the docs (surely Catholic) didn't want the Pope to miss Palm Sunday play a factor?

John Paul II was still wheeled out for Easter despite being a mute, hunched, drooling husk. I suspect Francis would need to be on his deathbed to miss it.
