Not sure if the right topic, but anyway reports that Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver has been found dead. He was 48. http://www.tmz.com/2015/12/03/scott-weiland-dead/

2 DDP teams await an obit to vocalise their points. Edit: Daily Mirror are first: http://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/scott-weiland-dead-former-stone-6950454

If I had hung out more on another forum I used to frequent, I might have guessed it. Apparently, he was in pretty bad shape since around April/May.

And Minnesota claims another one.... Their tour bus was only parked outside the Mall of America as their gig in Medina was canceled due to poor ticket sales. Which surprises me a little, as even Brett Michaels has been able to pack that out. I think the last time Weiland played here, they had to play at 7th St Entry which holds about 200 people. Whereas about 20 years ago, he'd have been packing out the mainroom of the adjoining First Avenue.

Tbh, I can't say I've ever heard of this guy up to this point, far less any of his choons. The STP band name rings a vague bell, but it is well off my radar, so he gets the same treatment as everyone else. In fact he could have got worse had I been bothered to include the phrase "heroin and crack cocaine addict". :evil2:

I think you'll find I'm a little more detailed/enthusiastic/shocked/euphoric, etc etc with deaths about which I care. It's up to others who do care about specific deaths to further comment on the thread in which they are reported.

Calm yer jets.

STP were popular in the 90s, but then drifted towards the where-are-they-now? genre.

I'd heard of them, never really bothered to listen to their music. So when someone told me at a gig I was at last night and said "Scott Weiland is dead", my reply was "oh that's a shame" and then went back in after a smoke to order a beer.

Same here. They were very popular with a particular alternative/indie crowd, but remained basically faceless to the general public. Sort of like Daisy Berkowitz, I guess.

Now now Dr Z, no games of Drz and nurses for you! I've explained myself. I'd have thought if the junkie was of any import he'd have been mentioned recently on this forum (not for years) or had his own thread.

It's ok to retrospectively care.

And at least I've heard of Daisy Berkowitz.

Me too. I'm 52 for fuck sake I didn't listen to STP. But if you're going to announce one of the top 10 deaths of the year (and make NO fucking mistake, this is), please do it with vim and vigor.

Could be a generational thing or they just weren't as popular in the UK but Stone Temple Pilots were one of the biggest bands in North America for much of the 90's. I assume far less people know of Berkowitz since he left Marilyn Manson right around when when they got famous.

I think it's a generational thing. I stopped listening to the radio with the exception of specific shows purely because I got sick of listening to the same 20-30 songs which eventually I would start to blot out or they would venture of the my Songs I can go the rest of my life without having to hear again list.

To you, it is. To others it may not be, it really depends on your interests. If I came on here telling you that Shane Byrne had died, I'll bet a pound that 99% of you would have to google who he is, whereas to me, it would be a fucking huge death because of my interest in motorbike racing. I happen to agree that Scott Weiland is quite a big death in the world of music, but others that may not have that interest may not agree. This old chestnut raises it's nobbly head every few weeks - what's a 'big' death and what isn't. Everything is relative, baby :)

The only thing that sticks in the mind was about a decade ago when 'slither' was never off the freebie music channels.

Another person I've seen live. Saw STP at Reading festival in 1993. They were pretty good, the crowd were... rough to put it mildly.

Sad news though. Marginally more surprising than when Layne Staley copped it but not by much.

You're becoming a really bitter and weird old man Phantom very quickly.

Got the hots for Allah, get severely sarcastic when people just want a decent amount of respect or mournfulness about a man who put together some nice tunes.

Are you so obsessively snobby about your dusty collection of punk EPs that you think his "radio friendly" 90s grunge deserves to be dismissed as though it was the work of Simon Cowell?

If you are even one iota like this in real life your kids probably either hate you or snicker at you behind your back.

Dr. Z, My record collection encompasses many genres of music, not just punk and spans across 3 rooms of my house. I've worked with many bands over the years and with artists who have had a bigger influence on today's music than Weiland had. I'm sorry to hear that he died and in the way that he did. If he was so popular, as you make to believe then his show wouldn't have been cancelled due to low ticket sales. That was obviously a sudden blow to him and he hit a wall with a nose full of cocaine.

I've only heard of him because he has the same surname as one of my best friends, no relation though as far as I'm aware, beyond that I could not have told you any more, but then most of the people I've heard of are dead already.
