Is there any secret to the longevity of these Turks? Are Dinçer and Ersoy the last survivors of the 1954 WC?

His Wikipedia says that he almost made the 1950 WC as well. Incredible.

Do you understand what “could be alive” means?

Italian Gino Pivatelli is definitely alive.

Uruguyans Omar Pedro Méndez and  Roberto Leopardi are like Dincer and Ersoy : no knews about them, so could be alive or dead.

So technically, there could be 6 survivors from the 1954 World Cup.

Ersoy was interviewed as recently as 2022, he is clearly alive.

Hamrin was the last living 1958 Finalist.

Now the earliest living finalists are those of 1962, Brazilian Amarildo and Czech Josef Jelinek.

Josef Jelinek dead at 83.

Amarildo quite in Immortal territory now.

I thought it was a satire because it said he is living in Florida. I checked on his Startiger profile, and he took a long time to respond to recent autograph requests. If he is living in Florida and the letters were sent to Prague, that would probably explained why.

Okay, so per his WP page, it seems that the error is that there were two players born in the 1940s named Josef Jelinek and they've generally been assumed to be the same guy up until now. I could be wrong, but I think the WC player really is dead, but the obits mistakenly attributed a longer career to him from a guy who played in America for the Cosmos and is still living.

The other Josef Jelinek was born in 1902, I'm pretty sure he's not still alive. This interview from two years ago with Jelinek makes it clear he's both the World Cup alum and the NY Cosmos player.

Although.... I'm faceblind as fuck, are these actually the same people?

The guy in the second story can't be Jelinek. I haven't listened to the interview yet, but in the description it says

Quote

He played in the World Cup before he sought asylum in Italy and later immigrated to the United States

The footballer Jelinek surely can't have claimed asylum, as he went back to play for Bohemians in 1973, after his spell with the Cosmos. Also he never spent any time in Italy, he went from the Czech League, to the Dutch League, to the NASL. Is this a guy who has pretended to be the real Jelinek for the past x years while living in the States?

That's hilarious. An editor on the Jelinek en.wiki page said that there had to be two because there's it.wiki pages for both. Having looked over them just now, it's obviously the same guy.

I actually did look up Josef Jelineks in Florida earlier. There aren't any born in 1946 at all, but there is one born in 1941, which I figured added some credibility to the idea the actual guy moved. But if the fraudster is claiming to be born well after the real one, where does he actually live? And why is he frauding as this guy anyway?

Could it be possible that the guy impersonated both Jelíneks? There is a club record in Teplice of a Josef Jelínek born in 1946.

My guess is (and this theory may have holes in it):

Real Jelinek born 1941, plays in World Cup (at a young age as well let's remember, he'd have been 21 during the final?)

Fake Jelinek born 1946, starts playing football after Real Jelinek. At some point he decides to emigrate/seek asylum in a foreign nation, starting with Italy. He uses the fact that he shares the same name as Real Jelinek and passes himself off as him, getting trials and contracts with at least some minor French team, and possibly others.

He's since kept up the charade and claimed to be the Real Jelinek, despite the years not matching up at all. His family are none-the-wiser, and so when it was reported that "Jelinek" had died, they contacted local media and said "what do you mean, he's still here?"

The only thing I'm not sure is which Jelinek played for the Cosmos - Real Jelinek or Fake Jelinek. Anyone got a team photo of their 1971 roster?

There's one from 1972 with (fake) Jelínek in it.

So this guy not only bluffed his way onto the same football teams as Pele, Beckenbauer and Eusebio, he scored the key goal in the second NASL season? Fucking hell.
