FIFA World Cup Players

Recommended Posts

Although there is an argument this could be within the Time Added thread, to be fair there is 8,000,000 threads about music, so why not two about football.

Some of those interested enough would have noticed my posts on early deaths of World Cup Players - but this is Deathlist and DDP ideas are wanted, I am sure and it is unlikely Emile Heskey, Paolo Wanchope and Philippe Lahm are going to be on many death pools.

In time, I& will try and do all the pre-1962 surviving players, but for now, I will round up the 1950 players and pre-1938 - of which there is only one, Rene Llense, who is near 100 (EDIT Now dead). He was however a squad player who never played.

Of the 1950 players, there are a maximum of 40 alive. However that World Cup saw a lot of South American teams, whose players are virtual unknowns, so the likelihood is that more Mexicans, Chilean, Bolivian and Paraguyan players are dead. 1954 and 1958 should be slightly more accurate.

Some famous names on there though and some certainly worth a stab on the DDP.

This will also be where other World Cup Players' deaths can be posted - and why not start as I mean to go on, with the death of Jan Zlocha, who played for the Czechoslovakian team in 1970 - 7 of their squad dead already. http://www.cas.sk/cl...ntant-cssr.html (IN Czech)

Note the below is only who played, not squad members (like Llense);

24 survivors (who played a game) **Note this (being alive) is presumed in the case of 3 teams***

There's also only a few others who might be alive that were a squad member:

Switzerland: Friedlander, Lusenti, Siegenthaler, Beerli, Gyger

Yugoslavia: Zlatkovic

Mexico: Cuburu, Cordoba, M Gutierrez

Chile: Rojas

Italy: Caprile

Paraguay: Berni, Paredes, Canete, Cantero

Bolivia: a lot of them but I think they've all gone

I tried something a bit nicer looking, unfortunately since there's no table BBCode on this forum the best I could use was white "I" signs to emulate spaces.

Swede, most of those are dead and most of them did play. Rydell (who died last week) and the Swiss bar the youngest three are dead, so are the majority of Mexicans, Chileans and Paraguyans. Dont rely on English Wikipedia, I've been researching this for decades. Also South Korea weren't there in 1950.

But of the non-players, Beara and Nilton Santos are the best known.

Sorry...I had so little information about these Hispanic players, so I just included everyone that didn't have any death info. With your valuable knowledge in this topic, it would be awesome if you could update the Wikipedia with some good references. My own list has players from 1954 World Cup as well, so that's why the South Korean guy accidentally got on the 1950 list. But thanks for clearing this up!

I would update WIkipedia, but it doesn't like, encourage or support independent research done via books and online death records (Because I've spent ages trying to edit racing drivers without success. So now I don't bother.

1954 to come in the next week or so.

You would think wikipedia would let some of the stuff be updated. Same thing with imdb there are people with only limited credits who have likely been dead for decades still listed as alive or unknown.

I have a Wikipedia account and I would love to make an attempt to update. But I don't want my account to be associated with a site of this character, as it would reveal too much.

As for Original Research policies, I don't think that a lot of people monitor the stubs about old footballers. For example, I once added a blog as a death reference for a fairly obscure actress. So far, no one's deleted it. If you don't want to try it, maybe you can provide the sources to someone else?

Well, all of the above are somewhere on the net;

Rene Quitral - Chilean site - search for "1982" "Rene Quitral"

Ingvar Rydell d. 20 June 2013 - I think updated now

Rodrigo Ruiz d. 1999 - on a Spanish Wiki

Juan Burgueno d. 21 Sep 1997 - all of these Uruguayans are on this link - http://baudoscampeoes.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/copa-do-mundo-de-1950-no-brasil.html

Hector Vilches d. 23 Sep 1998

Carlos Romero d. 28 Jul 1999

Rodolfo Pini d. 31 May 2000

Jose Naranjo d. 13 Dec 2012 - His Spanish Wiki page

Friedlander was in a book - I think one of the Sky Sports Yearbooks. Lusenti and some of the others were on a very good site called Player History, but it seems to have long disappeared so all the online history has gone, sadly.

Is the Player History website you're talking about in any way related to this forum? http://forum.playerhistory.com/

This link states that they will open up a new Player History site soon. There's even some contact info provided. http://www.playerhistory.com/

Anyway, it's too bad to hear about Rydell's death. Not too long ago, Sweden lost Hasse Jeppson and now this...

Looking at who will be the last surviving player to play in a world cup in the 20th century.

Samuel eto'o and Michael Owen appear to be the prime candidates.

Obviously long way off yet considering there are players still alive from the 1950 / 1954 world cup etc.

I wonder if any player from 2010 world cup has died ?

The 2010 players are all at the starting line, engine, although (insert Rob Green joke here).

Triple O really providing for the culture with this thread, it's the kind of thing I can imagine I'm going to become increasingly obsessed with as more and more pass on. Pretty sure this research will be stolen for a filler blog article on some newspaper site soon.

Trying to work out which of the 1950s survivors would get obits. Obviously all of the English players, and both Bahr and Borghi played in the USA's 1-0 win over England. Ghiggia would be the oldest surviving World Cup winner (correct?), so he should be OK. Bonpietri is a top 100 player of all time imho, and Amadei is one of the top scorers in Serie A history so they should both manage it no problem. Most of the rest could depend on whether Jonathan Wilson has the time to write about them that week.

To be honest, not many more than you've mentioned. Carbajal will and Ramallets should. Eizaguerre.. maybe. Palmer is a slim-line chance. The rest... nah

That Paul Gazzione isn't old like the guys who played in the 50s but his health is faded he could die soon.

Again, if someone clever can do the necessary and tidy it all up, I'd be very appreciative. EDIT - Thanks Death Impends, copied layout again so I can update re. Santos etc.

66 playing survivors (as far as we know)

Surely that should be surviving players if they are still all playing we have no hope.

As an addendum to that grammatical zinger, I think that every player from the 1990 WC has now retired, with Kasey Keller (retired in 2011) being the last man standing.

1994 WC players still going: Viola (Brazil), Faryd Mondragon (Colombia), Teddy Lucic (Sweden). Not sure if Viola actually saw any action on the pitch though.

Did he ever? He was doing just about the only decent bit of play in that final...

Unsurprisingly I've wiped the 94 final from my memory. All I remember is Baggio's successful penalty and subsequent celebration.

Well, it wasn't a great final, it was probably the dullest World Cup final ever in what was a good tournament IMHO (don't get suckered in by the revisionist view of it being otherwise, that's just football hipsters circumventing England's absence, which as Euro's 84 & 08 show, merely enhances a tournament's credentials!).

Viola came on in extra-time as I recall and was briefly dazzling. OK, nothing special compared to 1982 Brazil (shame you were too young for that, bwoy!), but in the context of the final itself, it was as if Brazil has thrown on the offspring of Garrincha.

2002 is the first tournament I really remember: in fact, seemingly as soon as I got into football, Scotland stopped qualifying for things. All the tournaments since then have had their merits and flaws.
