Marc Baecke, who played for Belgium in the 1982 FIFA World Cup, has died aged 60.

Along with the very recent passing of Francois Van Der Elst, that Belgium '82 WC squad looks suddenly omnious...

Most of them are 55-65 age bracket. Only other one who has gone is Ludo Coeck who died in a car crash in 1985.

Billy McNeill the first Briton to lift the European Cup is now unable to speak because of his dementia.

Nothing said about how ill he actually is but at 76 and in said state, might be a good bet for next year.

Anibal Ruiz, Paraguay's manager at the 2006 World Cup including that coma-inducing opener against England, dead at 74. He had a heart attack on the touchline just moments after it was announced the Puebla game was postponed due to a referee strike.

That was a real dull match, yet felt like a Cruyff's Holland game next to the horror show that was Ukraine vs Switzerland in the knockout stages.

Luxury compared to England 0-0 Nigeria in 2002. Bad enough watching a pointless, goalless, tepid excuse for a football match but to get up at around six in the morning and hear John Motson's breakfast bollocks took the cake all for the sake of watching World Cup football because it was there!

Strange really, International football really is the best and worst of the "Beautiful Game". Because on the opposite side of the spectrum we have the cream of the crop, top of the tops, 100%, 24-carat gold stone cold classic that was Spain 4-3 Yugoslavia in Euro 2000...

I missed Euro 2000. The 2002 World Cup was my introduction to football (and yet, somehow, I persisted with it). Best tournament match I've seen live imo be the Dutch vs the Czech Republic, 2-3, from Euro 2004. Alas, both sides shadows of themselves now. Better than some though, I've never seen Scotland qualify for a tournament as a fan yet...

England/Nigeria was on at the same time as the "looks quite good on extended highlights" Sweden v Argentina straight KO match in that group stage though, so presumably there was the chance to change channels. Not so with Ukraine v Switzerland, best summed up by one team playing from the first 30 seconds for penalties...and realizing once they got to them that none of them had practiced the fucking things!
