Yoo Sang-Chul looking okay during treatment:

I do wonder if there has been some progress in pancreatic cancer treatment, because with the exception of Frankie Banali all our popular picks seem to be stable.

My Reid vs Trebek vs Lewis thread hasn't made any progress. Pat Smullen is doing okay, too.

Ah sad. But he is probably due. I've been wondering about him for a while.

Emergency surgery went well, in spite of his heart problems:

Boris Gaganelov, who played for Bulgaria at the 1966 and 1970 World Cups has died apparently suddenly aged 78 - https://www.mbs.news/en/2020/06/cska-legend-boris-gaganelov-died-suddenly.html

A defender, he won 7 Bulgarian titles and 6 Bulgarian Cups with CSKA Sofia whom he played for between 1960 and 1974 after joining from hometown club Belasitsa Petrich.

He made 350 appearances for CSKA, scoring two goals and for the national team, he was capped 51 times.

Magdaleno Mercado, one of Don Nacho Trelles boys at the 1966 World Cup, has died at 75. Sixth team member to die, I reckon.

Trelles himself is now dead, but another one of his boys, Aaron Padilla Gutierrez, has died at 77 due to COVID-19. As they weren't falling fast enough...

I've always been doubtful about some of the alleged surviving 1950's footballers but never been able to find anything concrete. Until now.

Luis Mayanes, 'alive' at 95 - died in 1979, aged just 54. https://www.partidosdelaroja.com/1970/01/lindorfo-mayanes.html

However, the two other Chileans listed as alive - Andres Prieto and Manuel Munoz are still with us according to the same site which is quite comprehensive and updated often.

I am now pretty confident that the 6 listed alive:

Carbajal (Mexico), Prieto and Munoz (Chile), Saguier (Paraguay) and Boniperti and Giovannini (Italy) are very much with us.

There is some doubt whether there are Bolivian, Yugoslav or Swiss survivors, due to records not being as good, but the majority of them are definitely dead.

Pierino Prati, a striker who was part of the squad that reached the final of the World Cup in 1970, but never played a minute, has died of cancer aged 73.

Perhaps most famous for his time at Milan between 1966 and 1973 where he scored 72 goals in 143 outings for them and Roma where he scored 28 goals in 82 matches. His club career also saw him feature for Fiorentina, Savona and Salernitana, the latter of whom he began his career.

For the Italian national side, he scored seven times in 14 games.

Shame. His team were part of one of the all time great World Cup goals. Admittedly that was in Argentina v Serbia/Montenegro and the Serbian side didn't really have much to do with the 26 pass goal, but hey, they were on the same pitch!

Zaire's Kilasu Massamba played against Petkovic et al in 1974 and he also died last week. Sorry about font size as I'm on the phone and haven't the foggiest how to amend it.

I remember the 74 World Cup.

I mostly remember a ref giving a free kick to whoever the team was against Zaire.

Zaire built their wall and, before, I think, the ref blew the whistle for the other team to take it, a Zaire player ran from the wall and nigh on kicked the ball outta the fucking stadium!

Well, it was as funny as fuck then.

We have a diverse range of ages on here from their teend (min registration age is 13 but I think our current youngest is 16?, although there's been discussing of upping it) to their 60s or older.

By my fag packet calculations if LFN an remember that 74 world cup he's anywhere from his mid 50s upwards.

Quite interesting that there are people that old here. At that age I'd start to worry more about my own death than the deaths of others.
